With just days remaining until the close of nominations, the National Australia Day Council urges Australians to submit their nominations for the 2025 Australian of the Year Awards.

The deadline for submissions is midnight AEST, July 31, 2024.

Every year, the Australian of the Year Awards seek to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Australians from all walks of life.

With four distinct categories—Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year and Australia's Local Hero—there is a platform to honour Australians making significant contributions at all stages of life.

Nominating is simple and can be the first step toward national recognition for someone making a difference in our communities.

It takes just one nomination for someone to be considered for the Awards. You don't need to know the nominee personally, just provide some details of what they’ve achieved or contributed and why you find them inspiring.  Whether it’s through community service, innovation, bravery or leadership, if someone inspires you with their contributions, let us know.

Visit australianoftheyear.org.au to submit a nomination online. Share your story of inspiration and help celebrate the spirit of Australia by recognising those who strive to make our country a better place.

“This is an opportunity for the public to participate directly in acknowledging those who embody the nation’s values and spirit,” said Mark Fraser AO CVO, CEO of the National Australia Day Council.

“One nomination can elevate a quiet achiever to national recognition.”

Don’t miss your chance to put forward a deserving individual. The stories of our nominees can inspire a nation and resonate around the world. Make your nomination count before the July 31 deadline.

ENDS.

Opposition support for stronger gun laws in Tasmania welcomed

Statement attributable to Australian Gun Safety Alliance convenor and Alannah & Madeline Foundation advocacy advisor Stephen Bendle: The Foundation welcomes the Opposition's support for strong gun laws in Tasmania. The aim of any gun reforms is to make the community safer, and we are pleased to see the Opposition, the Greens and many Independents standing together on this. Not a single Tasmanian will be prevented from using or owning a firearm for which they have a legitimate need. However, reducing the number of guns in a community is clearly in the interests of public safety. Tasmanians saw the improvements in gun…

Commissioners call on government to support efforts to bring back Australian women and children from Syria

While they have been issued Australian passports, the 34 women and children are being denied support from the government to return to Australia from the camp in northeast Syria where they have been held for the last 7 years. This is despite the successful repatriation of other Australian…
