Today’s Dental Auburn Leads the Charge Against Child Dental Hospitalizations with Education and Enhanced Access to Preventative Care

Today's Dental Auburn 3 mins read

Auburn, New South WalesToday's Dental Auburn is setting a new standard in the fight against the rising trend of hospitalisations for preventable dental conditions among children. With recent data unveiling a sharp increase in such hospital stays, the clinic is initiating a crucial campaign aimed at mitigating this concerning development. According to the Australian Dental Association, the incidence of children aged between five and nine being hospitalised for preventable oral issues surged to nearly 11 in every 1000 in the 2021-2022 period, up from 9.5 per 1000 in 2018. This situation is even more dire for Indigenous children, where the figures have escalated to 14 per 1000, from 11.5.

A significant factor contributing to this worrying scenario is the low uptake of the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), a comprehensive federal initiative offering up to $1095 over two years for basic dental services to eligible children. Despite its availability, a mere 38% of eligible families are leveraging this program, underscoring a critical need for increased awareness and accessibility—a challenge Today's Dental Auburn is eager to address.

Dr. Kenneth Lee, at the forefront of Today's Dental Auburn's new initiative, emphasises the importance of this campaign: "Education and preventative care are the pillars of oral health, especially for our children. It’s disheartening to see the rates of hospitalisations for conditions that are largely preventable. Our mission is to change this narrative by enhancing awareness and facilitating easier access to necessary dental care."

The clinic's strategy involves an aggressive outreach program aimed at demystifying the process of accessing benefits under the CDBS and underscoring the importance of regular dental check-ups and care. "Our objective is clear: to ensure no child in our community suffers from dental diseases due to a lack of information or access to services. This is a call to action for parents, guardians, and the entire community," Dr. Lee added.

Furthermore, Today's Dental Auburn is setting its sights on addressing the under-reported issue of traumatic dental injuries in children, advocating for the use of protective mouthguards during sports activities. "Sports-related injuries account for a significant number of dental emergencies among children. A simple measure like wearing a mouthguard can prevent many of these incidents, safeguarding our children's dental health," Dr. Lee stressed.

In response to these challenges, Today's Dental Auburn's campaign does not just stop at raising awareness. The clinic is actively involved in community outreach, holding informative sessions and workshops aimed at educating parents on the best practices for maintaining their children's oral health and the benefits available through the CDBS.

"Every child has the right to a healthy smile. By equipping parents with the knowledge and resources they need, we are taking a significant step towards a future where preventable dental conditions in children are a thing of the past," Dr. Lee concluded, underscoring the clinic's commitment to this cause.

As Today's Dental Auburn embarks on this pivotal initiative, the aim is to foster a culture of preventive care and awareness that permeates throughout the community. Through collaborative efforts, educational outreach, and dedicated care, Today's Dental Auburn is leading the way in ensuring the oral health and well-being of children in Auburn and beyond.
