Treaties Committee to examine ILO conventions supporting a safe and healthy work environment

Parliament of Australia < 1 mins read

The Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCOT) will hold a public hearing for its inquiries into two International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions: No. 187: Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention and No. 191: Safe and Healthy Working Environment (Consequential Amendments) Convention.

Together these conventions give effect to the elevation of ‘a safe and healthy working environment’ to a fundamental principle and right at work in the ILO Declaration on the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work in 2022.

Committee Chair Mr Josh Wilson MP said: “The purpose of Convention No. 187 is to advance the rights of workers to a safe and healthy working environment and to require national policies to prevent workplace injuries, diseases, and deaths. Convention No. 191 amends several other ILO conventions to ensure that they appropriately reflect the right to a safe and healthy working environment.”

The Committee will hear from witnesses from the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The Committee will also hold its biannual briefing with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on trade agreements and other treaties under negotiation.

Focusing on subsidies alone could exacerbate childcare problems: new research

New researchby Mandala and The Front Project indicates that if the government focuses its childcare reforms solely on increased subsidies it is likely to continue problematic trends already affecting cost and quality. The research finds that access to not-for-profit childcare providers –who, on average, have been found to provide higher quality care with lower fees– is already drying up in high-to-mid SES areas and that trend is likely to spread to low SES areas if childcare reform is only focused on the demand-side. The reason is that for-profit providers are taking over from NFP providers as subsidies increase the pool of…

NEW SURVEY: Plug-in hybrids helping to drive Australian motorists on the path to electrification

A new national poll shows that plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are acting as a stepping stone to driving pureelectric, and that the Federal Government’s Fringe Benefits Tax (EV FBT)exemption is a key reason many Australians are choosing a PHEV.The new research also indicates that importantly drivers are using their vehicles as electric first, and that once they experience a PHEV, they enjoy the advantages and say they are most likely to again select some kind of electric vehicle for their next car.Once Australians get into an electric car, they are very unlikely to turn back.Commissioned by National Automotive Leasing and…
