The Eastern Health Institute currently has more than 1,150 ongoing research projects underway, discovering ways to enhance and shape the future of health.

Acting Executive Director – Eastern Health Institute, Adjunct Associate Professor Paul Buntine says research activities have already made a great impact on providing excellent care and experiences, while enabling and empowering people to carry out that care in innovative ways.

While research has a long history at Eastern Health, the Institute itself was established in 2023, to bring research and education activities together across the organisation.

Through the Institute, Eastern Health maintains productive research and educational links with its three main partners: Monash, Deakin, and La Trobe Universities; this last year alone, the Institute authored 543 research papers.

Prof Buntine envisions the Eastern Health Institute with collaboration at its core.

“Geographically, Eastern Health is the largest healthcare network in Victoria with over 11,000 employees. From a research perspective, this gives us a real opportunity to really expand and collaborate within our organisation and also externally.

“An advantage of the Eastern Health Institute that we've created for research support, is that it's not tied to a specific specialty. It's not tied to medicine, allied health or nursing. And so centralising our collaborations with universities allows us to look for synergies, look for multidisciplinary opportunities and really try to break away from that siloed approach,” he said.

The Eastern Health Institute also provides educational opportunities. Its learning management system coordinates 726 educational and training courses for staff delivered online and face-to-face. From those, there have been 174,000 online course completions and 56,751 participants who attended face to face sessions.

“As the Eastern Health Institute grows in strength and maturity, my hope is that it will be a central home for people to further pursue their research ideas whether they're a brand new or experienced researcher and regardless if they’ve come from a research background in a university, or in the clinical field,” Prof Buntine added.

Centre to play key role in global AI medical research

Artificial intelligence promises to unlock new cures for cancer and other diseases by revolutionising the speed, cost and availability of personally designed drugs and enabling these to be tested on “digital twins" before being given to patients. AI will enable broad-spectrum like chemotherapy to be replaced by these more personalised, better targeted treatments. Scientists at La Trobe University's new Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation (ACAMI), launched on September 13, will also apply AI techniques tomRNA therapy development to enable faster design of more precise and effective treatments. Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell said ACAMI would sit within La…
