Appointment of Independent Administrator, CFMEU (Construction and General Division)

Fair Work Commission < 1 mins read

From today, in accordance with the provisions of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Amendment (Administration) Act 2024, the Construction and General Division of the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) has been placed under administration for up to five years.

The Attorney-General, authorised by the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, has determined a scheme for the administration in the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) (CFMEU Construction and General Division Administration) Determination 2024.

Today I have signed an instrument to appoint Mr Mark Irving KC as Administrator.

As the independent statutory regulator of Registered Organisations under the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009 (RO Act), my functions include:

  • promoting the efficient management of organisations and high standards of accountability of organisations and their office holders to their members.
  • embedding within organisations a culture of good governance and voluntary compliance with the law; and
  • ensuring compliance with the RO Act and taking enforcement action when necessary.

It is my intention to work with Mr Irving KC in an open and transparent way to ensure the CFMEU’s Construction and General Division can operate effectively into the future.

I am committed to ensuring the success of this arrangement and advancing the lawful operations of the Construction & General Division for the benefit of its members, the broader CFMEU and the Australian community.

Child employment regulator issues 1000 licences to help keep kids safe in the workplace

More than 1000 Victorian employers have been granted a licence to employ children under 15 since the new child employment licensing system came into place. The new laws, administered by Wage Inspectorate Victoria and designed in consultation with stakeholders and the community, saw a licensing system replace a permit system, allowing businesses to employ multiple kids under one licence, instead of needing a permit for each child they employ. Since the licensing system came into place, the Wage Inspectorate…

Wednesday 11 September 2024 Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is having a big impact on education. The IEU welcomes the federal government’s response, including the Study Buddy or Influencer report, released overnight. “This parliamentary report is crucial to guiding the safe and ethical use of GenAI in classrooms,” said IEUA NSW/ACT Branch Secretary Carol Matthews. “But the reality is that GenAI is outpacing efforts to provide a comprehensive regulatory response on behalf of teachers, school staff and students.” The 126-page report follows a 16-month Parliamentary Inquiry and contains 25 recommendations designed to take up the educational opportunities afforded by GenAI, while…
