Calling all dads to dress up and make a difference this Father’s Day

Australian Koala Foundation 2 mins read

22 August 2024

The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is encouraging all dads in Canberra to dress up with their children and join the Koala Army’s March for Creatures Great and Small this Father’s Day.

Coordinated by the AKF, The Koala Army’s March will see hundreds of wildlife lovers and advocates march peacefully to Parliament House, Canberra in support of the Koala Protection Act, which ultimately seeks to have the Koala protected by law against the destruction of natural habitat.

As the March coincides with Father’s Day, AKF Chair Deborah Tabart OAM is calling on dads to ‘bring their own joeys’ and hopes that it will be an exciting way to celebrate the occasion with family while simultaneously contributing to making a change for Australian flora and fauna.

“We would love to see dads getting into the spirit and dressing up as their favourite Australian animals, and we would love to see children donning butterfly wings, angel wings or even mice outfits in support of this cause,” Tabart OAM says.

The Koala Army’s March for Creatures Great and Small promises to be a colourful celebration of Australia’s beloved wildlife, whilst also unifying the community in support of a solution to ensure the prolonged safety and protection of the nation’s most iconic animal.

“In addition to everyone’s fantastic costumes, there will also be jumping kangaroos, stilt-walkers dressed as ladybugs, life-sized cockatoos, parrots and a marching band to top it all off. We want to make sure that everyone can enjoy coming together with their families and their community for the greater good.”

Date: Sunday September 1st 2024
Time: 10am - 1pm
Location: Gather at Kings Park, march to Parliament House.

“I strongly believe that the only way to guarantee the future of the Koala is with the Koala Protection Act,” states Tabart OAM. “I’m confident that if the wider community unites in support of the KPA, that Parliament will have no choice but to introduce it as law when they realise just how many people are committed to seeing it passed.”

Campaign Director, Laurie Levy today called on Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan to act responsiblyand cancel the 2025 recreational duck shooting season, citing the severe risk of spreading thedeadly H5N1 avian influenza virus. “Australia remains the only continent to have avoided the H5N1 strain of avian influenza to date. However, the virus is reportedly devastating penguins and other species in Antarctica. Withmigratory birds continuing to arrive from both the northern hemisphere and Antarctica, the risk toAustralian wildlife and agricultural industries is unprecedented.
