Certainty around international student commencements welcomed

La Trobe University < 1 mins read

La Trobe University welcomes the certainty provided today about international student commencements in 2025 and the removal of Ministerial Direction 107. This will enable La Trobe to help the Government realise the ambitions set out in the Universities Accord.

La Trobe supports transparent and proportionate measures to ensure the managed and sustainable growth of international students in Australia. We recognise that there is broad political and community support to reduce net migration levels.

La Trobe has been disproportionately impacted by the student visa processing arrangements stemming from Ministerial Direction 107, which have undermined our mission to raise participation in higher education, including in regional Victorian communities, and contribute to national skills shortages, such as in health and education. This is despite our active plans to develop greater capacity in student accommodation, most recently in Bendigo.

We look forward to welcoming international students across our campus network in 2025, who play such a significant role in our local communities and economies across Victoria.

Professor Theo Farrell, Vice-Chancellor, La Trobe University

Government snubs Senate Committee

The federal government is snubbing a Senate committee with a headlong rush to cap the number of international students wishing to study at Australia’s universities. The committee is inquiring into the Education Services for Overseas Students Amendment (Quality and Integrity) Bill. The matter was referred to it by the Senate on May 16 this year and since there have been several public hearings with 70 submissions received. “Such has been the desire to make representations to the committee the reporting date for it has been extended several times, including just this week and now is proposed for September 16, 2024,”…

Australian Government Intensifies Its Assault On International Education Sector Jobs

The Australian Government has intensified its attack on jobs in the international education sector, releasing details of the proposed 2025 caps on the number of international skills training students last Friday. The peak body representing independent Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), higher education and international education providers, the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA), has been inundated with questions from members who are perplexed, bewildered, and deeply worried. “College closures are now inevitable, and ITECA members lay the blame squarely at the feet of Australian Government politicians responsible for international education policy,” said Troy Williams, ITECA Chief Executive. Over the weekend,…
