Women’s Weekly challenges Australians to a million minutes of walking!

TV and radio star Chrissie Swan will lead women all over Australia as they take to the streets next month as part of a major health and wellbeing campaign organised by The Australian Women’s Weekly.

Walk with The Weekly aims to get people to walk for 30 minutes a day throughout September to improve their physical and mental health and encourage more community connections. Women’s Weekly, Australia’s leading women’s lifestyle brand, is challenging Australians to record a million minutes between them.

Walk with The Weekly ambassador Chrissie, who credits walking with improving her overall health and wellbeing, can’t wait to get going.

“I’m really excited to be part of Walk with The Weekly because walking is right up my alley!” she declared. “I just want to share how great it feels to get up and out into the fresh air.”

New Roy Morgan research shows that walking Is Australia’s number one type of exercise, enjoyed by 3 in 4 women - that’s nearly 8.5 million nationally.

And there’s never been a better time to put your best foot forward as the cost-of-living crisis has seen a spike in mental health conditions. A recent survey found over a third were caused by financial stress, with work troubles and family fallouts not far behind.

For Chrissie, walking has been a saviour, helping her on her personal journey and giving her some much-needed me time.

“It helped me move away from seeing exercise as a punishment,” she says. “It’s so freeing and I’d love Walk with The Weekly to help other women discover how wonderful it can be. Even if I can only get one person to take the first step and embrace it, it’ll be a win for me!”

Chrissie discusses her love of walking and reveals her own personal tips for those thinking of giving it a go in the September issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, on sale 8 August.

Walk with The Weekly will be officially launched at the inaugural Australian Women’s Weekly Health Summit in Sydney on 31 August. The summit will motivate guests to achieve better health in mind, body, and soul through a series of expert panel discussions and guest speakers covering a wide range of topics from mental health and menopause to financial wellness and healthy eating.

Editor of The Australian Women’s Weekly, Sophie Tedmanson, hopes the 30-day walking challenge will inspire more women to tread the pavements on a regular basis to improve their health and community connection.

“Walking is one of my favourite ways to stay fit and healthy,” she says. “It’s a great way to meet new friends and top up your wellbeing. We are thrilled to have Chrissie on board as she’s living proof of how even a short daily walk can be a fantastic pick-me-up.

“I’ve got my sneakers ready and I’m looking forward to joining so many Aussie women walking together towards better health and happiness.”

The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology: Global Commission proposes major overhaul of obesity diagnosis, going beyond BMI to define when obesity is a disease.

A global Commission, published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology and endorsed by 75 medical organisations around the world [1], presents a novel, nuanced approach to diagnose obesity, based on other measures of excess body fat in addition to body mass index (BMI), and objective signs and symptoms of ill health at the individual level. The proposal is designed to address limitations in the traditional definition and diagnosis of obesity that hinder clinical practice and healthcare policies, resulting in individuals with obesity not receiving the care they need. By providing a medically coherent framework for disease diagnosis, the Commission also…
