CIMIC companies to start operating new city section of Sydney Metro

CIMIC Group 3 mins read

CIMIC Group’s Pacific Partnerships, UGL and CPB Contractors are delighted to acknowledge a major milestone on Sydney Metro, with services now operating on the Sydney Metro City section.

Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project, revolutionising the way the city moves with a world-class, automated train service.

Services started today on the M1 Metro Northwest & Bankstown Line, now running between Tallawong and Sydenham.

The Chatswood to Sydenham metro service extension connects Sydney’s booming northwest to Sydenham via the central business district. It runs under Sydney Harbour, through new underground stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal, and Waterloo, as well as new metro platforms at Central Station and Sydenham.

With these new stations and platforms, the Sydney Metro now stops at 21 stations from Tallawong to Sydenham. At ultimate capacity, it can move more people across Sydney Harbour in the busiest hour of the peak time than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel combined.

CIMIC Group companies funded, designed, constructed, delivered and will operate the project:

  • Pacific Partnerships, as an equity partner in the Northwest Rapid Transit Consortium, and UGL as part of Metro Trains Sydney, will operate and maintain the metro from Tallawong to Sydenham, in total more than 50 kilometres of rail and 21 metro stations, including the section opened today
  • CPB Contractors, with partners, designed and constructed the project’s twin 15.5 kilometre tunnels and delivered associated civil works in the city section
  • CPB Contractors and UGL connected Sydney Metro City to the existing Metro North West Line, completing the mechanical and electrical fit-out of 31 kilometres of tunnels and six underground stations. These works were a continuation of CPB Contractors and UGL’s earlier construction of the Metro North West Line, which included twin 15 kilometre tunnels, 13 stations and 4000 new commuter car parking spaces
  • UGL delivered the project’s radio system and through its stake in Metro Trains Sydney, extending its existing services on the Metro North West Line.

CPB Contractors Managing Director Jason Spears said: “Alongside the engineering and construction excellence that brought these Sydney Metro projects to life, our team engaged more than 1,000 local businesses, including 1.2% Indigenous or social enterprises, employed a local workforce of more than 2000 people, and provided training to more than 10,000 workers across 31 different programs and certificates, leaving a lasting social and skills legacy for greater Sydney.”

UGL Managing Director Doug Moss said: “Through its stake in Metro Trains Sydney, UGL will operate and maintain Australia’s first fully automated rail system, from Tallawong to Sydenham. Passengers will be able to catch a metro service every four minutes in the peak. We are delighted to celebrate this milestone and build on the popularity of Metro North West, which has had more than 84 million customer journeys and 18 million kilometres travelled in five years.”

Pacific Partnerships Managing Director Simon Nicholls said: “This opening builds on successful operation of the new fully automated Metro North West Line – the first phase of the metro which opened in May 2019. The city section of the project will enable a seamless customer experience from Chatswood into the Sydney CBD and beyond to Bankstown by 2025.”
