Cindy Ngamba secures historic first medal for Refugee Olympic Team

Australia for UNHCR 2 mins read

Australia for UNHCR is celebrating the monumental achievement of Cindy Ngamba, who has secured the first-ever medal for the Refugee Olympic Team at the Paris Olympics.

Ms Ngamba’s bronze medal in the women’s 75kg boxing category marks a historic moment for the Refugee Olympic Team and refugees worldwide.

Trudi Mitchell, CEO of Australia for UNHCR, expressed her admiration for Ms Ngamba’s milestone achievement: “Cindy’s victory is a testament to the resilience and determination of refugees everywhere. Becoming an Olympic athlete is an incredible feat, made much more difficult for some who have been forced to flee their home countries. Cindy’s success not only brings pride to the Refugee Olympic Team but will inspire displaced people to pursue their dreams despite the challenges they face.

“The Refugee Olympic Team was founded as a symbol of hope and inspiration for refugees everywhere. This milestone by Cindy Ngamba reminds us what refugees can do when their talent is recognised and supported, and when they are given opportunities to reach their full potential,” said Ms Mitchell.

Originally from Cameroon, Ms Ngamba fled her home country and found refuge in the UK at the age of 11. Overcoming language barriers and adversity, she discovered her passion for boxing at a local youth club. Her dedication and hard work have now culminated in this historic achievement on the world stage.

Ms Ngamba faced Panama’s Atheyna Bylon in the semi-final bout. Her opponent, a seasoned boxer and former world champion, presented a formidable challenge.

In her quarterfinal bout, Ms Ngamba defeated Davina Michel of France, securing her place in the semifinals and guaranteeing at least a bronze medal.

Ms Ngamba’s success underscores the importance of supporting refugee athletes. Her achievement is a significant moment for the Refugee Olympic Team, which was established to provide displaced athletes with the opportunity to compete at the highest levels of sport and to serve as a symbol of hope and inclusion for refugees worldwide.

Backing down from net zero puts people and communities at risk

The Liberal Party’s decision to abandon the commitment to net zero emissions by 2050 puts people, communities and the environment at risk. This threat is most acute for people and communities experiencing disadvantage, who have least capacity to prepare, adapt and recover from extreme weather events, ACOSS says. “This withdrawal from the emissions commitment, as the global community is gathered at COP, shows indifference to our climate emergency and threatens further harm to people already experiencing the sharpest impacts of climate change,” ACOSS Acting CEO Edwina MacDonald said. “Communities experiencing disadvantage across Australia face escalating threats from intensifying natural disasters.…

Victorian homelessness body warns of irreparable damage without urgent housing investment

Council to Homeless Persons has issued an impassioned plea to the Victorian Government to continue its legacy of bold reforms by funding evidence-backed programs and solutions to the state’s worsening homelessness emergency. Victoria’s peak body for homelessness has used its 2026-27 budget submission to highlight the highest rates of homelessness in living memory, calling for urgent and strategic investments which could turn the tide for the state, which has the lowest share of social housing in the country. “The Victorian Government has a strong track record of bold reform. Our leaders have given us action on Treaty, voluntary assisted dying…
