First local teaching students ready to graduate through Riverina Teaching Hub

UNSW School of Education Riverina 2 mins read

The first students to complete their studies through the Riverina Teaching Hub pilot program are being recognised at a graduation celebration in Wagga Wagga on Tuesday 27 August.

The Riverina Teaching Hub was established in 2023 by the NSW Department of Education in partnership with UNSW Sydney to attract and retain local teachers. The model provides on-the-job training for aspiring teachers in local public schools while they study for their teaching degree.

One of the graduates, Peehille Perera, highlighted the exceptional opportunities she’s had to develop her confidence and skills as a teacher through working at Murrumbidgee Regional High School in Griffith while studying for a Master of Secondary Teaching.

“Working in a local high school whilst studying has been such a huge advantage. I’ve had ongoing mentoring and guidance from experienced teachers, which has allowed me to refine my practice and feel so much more confident in the classroom.”

Fellow graduate Elisabetta Lamanna has taken on a full-time teaching position in the English department at Wagga Wagga High School since completing her studies in April.

“I was working at the school as a paraprofessional whilst completing my teaching degree, so the transition into a full-time role as a graduate teacher has been seamless. I know the students well, and my colleagues have been incredibly supportive.”

UNSW Riverina Teaching Hub Director Emily McKinney says the students completing the program will support schools facing dire teacher shortages and needing quality graduates.

“UNSW is committed to producing high-quality, classroom-ready teachers. These graduates have been immersed in the school community from the beginning of their studies and have had access to outstanding educational opportunities through a top 20 global university. It is exciting to see these graduates stepping into their new teaching roles in local schools.”

The graduation celebration will be held at Uneke Lounge in Wagga Wagga with guests including UNSW Head of School of Education, Associate Professor Tony Loughland and Federal Member for Riverina, the Hon. Michael McCormack.

Union scores major win in fight against university wage theft

The National Tertiary Education Union has welcomed the Fair Work Ombudsman ordering $23 million in stolen wages to be repaid to University of Sydney staff. The decision marks the second significant win for workers this week after it was revealed the University of Melbourne would repay $72 million owed to staff. Both enforceable undertakings incorporate a commitment to embedding a voice for workers that gives a direct role for unions to raise wage theft and workplace law compliance with management. NTEU members have fought hard for an end to systemic wage theft in higher education, with more than 30 universities…

ITECA’s Federal Election Manifesto Prioritises Student Choice in Tertiary Education

Australia’s future economic growth depends on a highly skilled, productive, and educated workforce. Recognising this, the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) has released the ITECA Federal Election Manifesto, calling on the next Australian Parliament to put students at the heart of a high-performing tertiary education system. The manifesto outlines a bold vision to dismantle barriers that restrict students’ access to quality skills training and higher education. “It calls for reforms that allow students to study with the provider best equipped to meet their educational and career goals, be it an independent Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or a higher education…

Education union welcomes reform to childcare parental activity test

11 December 2024 The Independent Education Union welcomes the federal Labor government’s announcement that it will scrap the childcare parental activity test if re-elected in 2025. The IEU, which represents teachers in the early childhood education and care sector, believes every child should have access to high-quality early learning. Currently, the activity test requires parents either to be employed or engaged in other approved activities – such as job-seeking, volunteering or studying – to access the federal childcare subsidy. If Labor is re-elected in 2025, every family earning less than $533,280 per year will have access to three days per…
