Highly Collectable Victorian Number Plate Sets New Auction Record

DONINGTON AUCTIONS < 1 mins read

A new Australian Auction record was set today (Sunday 25th August) at Donington Auctions ‘Collector Car and Number Plate’ Auction.

Victorian numerical heritage number plate ‘123-456’ (lot 1) was sold for an astonishing $363,000 which smashed the pre-auction estimate of $250,000-280,000.  The result now makes this revered ascending plate the most expensive 6-digit Victorian number plate to be sold at auction.

Donington had set the previous record for a 6-digit plate in February 2024, selling the lucky ‘888-888’ for $230,000.

Donington’s live on-line auction saw two determined bidders locked in a protracted bidding war for the plate, one of a number of highlights from today’s auction.

Another highlight achieved went to a beautiful 1924 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (lot 62) which found a new owner at $195,000, while a Jaguar XK150 (lot 27) brought $62,000 and a fully restored 1958 Austin Healey ‘Bug Eye’ Sprite (lot 55) sold for a market defining $50,000.  An original 1956 Melbourne Olympic numberplate (lot 12) which fitted to an official’s vehicle which was driven by the current elderly owner some 68 years ago, also surpassed its estimate of $800-800, selling for $2,700.

“Today’s auction saw some outstanding results in a challenging market, once again demonstrating the desirability of high-quality objects will always set the benchmark and recalibrate the market,” Donington Auctions’ Cameron Sabine said.
