HSU Statement

Health Services Union < 1 mins read

Lloyd Williams, HSU National Secretary said:

“The broader Health Services Union is horrified by the charges that have been laid by the Fair Work Commission against Diana Asmar and six other individuals from the Health Workers Union. Our union has no tolerance for misuse of members funds and it’s important to specify that this is isolated to the Victoria Health Workers Union branch. The Union’s national executive has consistently sought to stand Diana Asmar aside while this investigation has been underway.

“The Union’s legal representatives will spend the next few days examining the best way to continue our efforts to swiftly restore this branch of the Union to full integrity, with a robust focus on its 16,000 hard working members.”

The HSU is calling for the 12-day leave entitlement to be part of the minimum employment standards for all workers. The union will meet with federal politicians in Canberra this week as part of its national campaign for reproductive leave.…

Edith Cowan University council resignations raise serious questions

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has demanded Edith Cowan University give a full explanation of a raft of resignations from the university council. It was reported this week that four members of the council had quit. The resignations came after the governing body elected a new chancellor while student elections were taking place and there were no student representatives on the council. NTEU WA Division Secretary Dr Cathy Moore said: “A new chancellor should never have been appointed while student voices weren’t represented on the council due to them not being eligible to vote at the time. “I am…

John Hunter Hospital workers rally to prevent cafe closure

HSU members at John Hunter Hospital will band together with the local community to rally against HealthShare's misguided decision to close their staff cafe, part of a spate of four closures across the state. Over 1,000 staff members across various medical fields rely on the retail outlets operated by HealthShare, and the cafe at John Hunter is an important venue for staff to relax and recharge, while enjoying an affordable coffee or meal. Alternative private providers do not accept a meal vouchers that staff receive when they work extended shifts. A petition calling for the decision to be reversed has…
