SO tough they eat barbed wire for breakfast and look directly at the sun, but this Hot Chilli Wing Challenge is stopping them all!

There’s a buckle battle for the ages going on at the legendary Mount Isa Mines Rodeo in Outback Queensland as cowboys and cowgirls ride the biggest bulls and broncs and fly at dust-defying speeds around barrels, BUT …. just a few hundred metres from the famous red dirt arena, there’s people actually being buckled by the hottest Hot Chilli Wing Challenge in the country!

While they are tough in Mount Isa, so tough they plant nails and harvest crowbars, they eat barbed wire for breakfast, and they look directly at the sun, but this year even the toughest heavyweights of heat are tapping out of Shank Brothers BBQ challenge, while the winners do MILK SHOEYS because it’s that face-meltingly hot!

Shank Brothers BBQ have taken heat to an all new level for this year’s Mount Isa Rodeo Festival. Added to the Hot Chilli Wing Challenge (many have tried, few have survived to take the title), they have introduced a new race to the bone – Australia’s only Rib Wrecker Challenge, which is teams based, meaning more  iron-stomached masochists are falling by the red-dusty wayside!

THE HOT WING CHALLENGE feat. *The Ghost of Chainsaw Chilli Sauce:

The Shank Brothers’ Hot Wing Challenge is legendary. Onlookers stare, transfixed with a mix of fascination and horror, as they watch chilli chasers and heat hunters compete-eat hot wings, until only one champion is left standing. It’s the literal Hunger Games, culinary carnage, with Ralph and Badger from Shank Brothers BBQ the Ringmasters of Fire. The competition continues  across Sunday.

CHAINSAW. It’s a name that still gives cowboys across the country a cold shiver. He was the famous, unrideable bull who reigned supreme across the Australian rodeo circuit between 1987 and 1994. He could spin on a two cent piece, lunge, kick all four legs in the air, and fly out of the chute and barrel role with an athleticism that made Michael Jordan look like a penguin. Long after his final buck, Chainsaw remains a rodeo legend.

In the tribute we didn’t know we needed, low ‘n’ slow pitmasters the Shank Brothers BBQ together with Mount Isa Mines Rodeo have created a hot sauce for the famous Hot Wing Challenge, and named it, Ghost of Chainsaw.

Shankie Ralph Barnett said the Ghost of Chainsaw sauce is every bit as fiery as the champion bull, and is guaranteed to knock rodeo goers on their butts in less than eight seconds flat. “Making the sauce felt like building a nuclear bomb,” he said. “Every step had to be treated with extreme caution due to the potency of all the different chilies mixing together.”

They forged this beast of a sauce from the world’s hottest chilies, including Carolina Reaper, Moruga Scorpion, Habanero and Bhut Joloki. But how does it taste? After being deceived by a pleasant hit of fruity habanero with garlic, onion and lime notes, “an unrelenting inferno attacks all the senses,” said Ralph.

Introducing The Rib Wrecker Challenge:

In what will be a record-breaking race to the bone, teams will face off to see who can demolish BBQ's finest rack of pork ribs the fastest. Grand Champions of the rib rampage will be crowned, while those ruined by the ribs have only memories, and possibly indigestion!

It’s where legends are made - Mount Isa Rodeo Festival:

The world famous red dust of the legendary Mount Isa Rodeo in the Queensland Outback has called riders and ropers for 65 year. This rodeo has opened the chutes, set the barrels and tightened the girths on the best cowboys and cowgirls in the country – and it continues. It’s the Southern Hemisphere’s largest rodeo and the third largest rodeo in the world, and this year champions return to battle for the famous buckles, newcomers will become legends, juniors will rise up, eight seconds will seem like a lifetime and the heritage and importance of rodeo in the Outback will be celebrated.
