Niki Savva chosen to deliver Speaker’s Lecture 2024

Department of the House of Representatives 2 mins read

Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Honourable Milton Dick MP has chosen distinguished political journalist Ms Niki Savva to deliver the third Speaker’s Lecture at Parliament House on 9 September 2024.

Ms Savva’s lecture - Survival in the age of mistrust, challenges for politicians and journalists – will explore how trust in politics is being eroded by culture wars, how feelings rather than facts are creating battlelines amongst groups of voters, and how it is effecting the way politics is perceived in Australia.

Ms Savva is an award-winning journalist, author and political commentator. Her extraordinary career spans over five decades, where she has worked for The Australian, the Herald Sun and the Age as a Correspondent and Bureau Chief.

In 2016, she received a lifetime achievement award from the Melbourne Press Club for her outstanding coverage of Australian politics as a reporter, columnist and author.

“I was delighted when Ms Savva accepted my invitation to deliver this year’s lecture,” The Speaker said.

“The Australian media play a very important role in Australian democracy, and this lecture series provides them the platform to share their unique perspectives.”

“Ms Savva is one of the nations’ most respected journalists and I am really looking forward to her critical insights and observations she has gathered across her extensive and decorated career in the Australian media.”

Ms Savva will be introduced by the Speaker and the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Claressa Surtees.

A Q&A session will be held after Niki’s speech, with light refreshments.

To attend in-person – entry is free, registration for the event is essential. Please register via the online form. It will also be broadcast live on the APH website.

Australian Government ‘Free TAFE’ Legislation Rejected By Business Community

In a response that’s largely without precedent, the Australian Government’s skill funding legislation has been widely rejected by the business community. It’s hardly surprising that given that the Australian Government has sought to put “TAFE at the heart” of the skills training system, whereas peak employer organisations and industry associations have argued that policy should recognise the complementary role of independent Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). The Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA) notes that the Free TAFE Bill 2024 (Cth) seeks to permanently provide funding to the states and territories for at least 100,000 fee-free TAFE places. It is the…

“Two gender” policy, exit from Paris “rip-off” herald return of commonsense – Australia should follow

Family First welcomes the return of commonsense to America under President Donald Trump and will continue its fight for Australia to follow suit at the up-coming federal election. Trump’s declaration in his second inaugural address today that “as of this day it will be the policy of the United States Government that there are only two genders” is a win for the safety of girls and women, Family First National Director Lyle Shelton said. “How hard is it?” Mr Shelton asked. “We have been calling for this for years yet Australian political leaders remained captured by Woke political correctness. “Family…
