Media Alert – For immediate release
What: Press conference about EPA’s Browse Gas rejection from the Conservation Council of WA, Greenpeace Australia Pacific, Environs Kimberley and AMCS
When: 12pm TODAY Monday 5 April 2024
Where: WA Parliament House, front steps, 4 Harvest Tce, West Perth WA 6005
Following the reports this morning that the WA Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has rejected Woodside’s proposed Browse Gas project, leading Australian environmental organisations will hold a media conference at WA Parliament House at 12pm AWST to respond to the news.
Browse is Australia’s largest untapped conventional gas field and is located off the coast of the pristine Kimberley region in WA, beneath the extraordinary Scott Reef.
The EPA wrote to Woodside earlier this year to inform them of their findings about the proposal’s unacceptable potential impacts on endangered Pygmy Blue Whales, the threat to endangered Green Turtles and the risk of pollution and oil spills at the highly biodiverse and fragile Scott Reef.
It is understood that the letter makes numerous references to EPA objectives not being met. The EPA’s legislated objectives are to protect the environment and to prevent pollution.
Only two other oil and gas proposals have been recommended against by the WA EPA since the mid-1980s.
