PROTECTING THE FUTURE OF PORT PHILLIP BAY

Tuesday, 6 August 2024 2 mins read

The Allan Labor Government is supporting community groups to protect Port Phillip Bay’s iconic marine and coastal environment.

Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos announced the latest round of the Port Phillip Bay Fund grants, with a $2.3 million investment to support a wide range of community groups that include not-for-profits, schools and Traditional Owner groups to deliver 25 projects to improve Port Phillip Bay’s health, habitats and wildlife.

Grants of up to $300,000 were available for innovative, large-scale projects and up to $25,000 for smaller projects that directly benefit the coastal and marine environments of the Bay.

Port Phillip Bay is home to over 10,000 species of marine life with its diverse habitats, including sea grass meadows, rocky reefs and sandy beaches, providing essential breeding and nursery grounds.

In addition to being one of Victoria’s most important ecosystems, Port Phillip Bay is a major tourist destination supporting recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, snorkelling and sailing.

Since 2016, the Port Phillip Bay Fund has now provided more than $17 million in grants for 215 projects such as reef restoration, marine life monitoring, water quality improvements and litter reduction initiatives.

This program delivers on the Allan Labor Government’s Port Phillip Bay Environmental Management Plan 2017–2027, ensuring that Port Phillip Bay remains healthy and resilient for generations to come.

Victorian Government slammed for opening national parks to deer hunters

The Victorian National Parks Association, Invasive Species Council and Environment East Gippsland have slammed the Allan Government's decision to open 130,000 hectares of Victoria's Errinundra and Snowy River National Parks to seasonal deer hunting. "The government is shooting themselves in the foot. People visit national parks to walk, camp, birdwatch and immerse themselves in nature – not share the bush with amateur shooters with high-powered weapons," said Victorian National Parks Association Executive Director Matt Ruchel. State Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos claims hunting will ‘reduce the impact of deer on our national parks’, but the government's 2021 Statewide Deer Control Strategy…

National Parks need targeted feral deer control not ad-hoc hunting

Experienced park rangers and managers have described Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos’ decision to allow more recreational deer hunting in East Gippsland national parks as an attack on the very values of these precious areas. The Victorian Protected Areas Council, a professional body of former senior park staff, is encouraging the State Government to reconsider last Friday’s announcement. “Feral deer are a serious threat to our national parks and professional and targeted control programs are needed, not unplanned recreational hunting,” Victorian Protected Areas Council President Felicity Brooke said. This decision requires amending the National Parks Act 1975 but was announced last…

Energy retailer fined $961,550 for failing to credit accounts of over 6,000 customers

Energy retailer Pacific Blue Retail Pty Ltd (Pacific Blue), which trades as Tango Energy and Pacific Blue Retail, has paid $961,550 for allegedly breaching Victorian energy rules related to guaranteed service level payments. Victorian energy distributors are required to make guaranteed service level payments to customers who receive a level of service worse than a specific threshold or level. This occurs via a customer’s energy retailer. Where a distributor makes a guaranteed service level payment, the energy retailer must apply the credit to the customer’s account within 10 business days. The Essential Services Commission alleges that between 29 September 2021…
