Public hearing on the National Redress Scheme

Parliament of Australia < 1 min read

The Committee will hold a public hearing tomorrow for an inquiry into the National Redress Scheme to hear from the Department of Social Services.

At a public hearing on 2 August 2024, the Committee heard evidence from survivors who recalled their experiences seeking redress. This evidence has prompted the Committee to invite the Department of Social Services to a public hearing to hear their views.

Committee Chair Senator Catryna Bilyk said:

‘We greatly appreciate the bravery and courage shown by survivors who came forward to tell their stories. We are progressing towards completing the inquiry.’

‘If you have been thinking of making a submission, you should send it to us soon. You can ask the Committee to keep your evidence and your name confidential.’

Submissions to the inquiry close on 2 September 2024 and the Committee is expecting to report in October 2024.

If you would like to make a submission or find out more, please email the Committee Secretariat at [email protected] or check the Committee’s webpage. A discussion paper aims to provide guidance to individuals and organisations interested in making submissions to the inquiry. Full details of what the inquiry is examining can be found in the terms of reference on the Committee’s website. An easy English guide is also available.

Australians for Mental Health welcomes $517 million disability support program

Australians for Mental Health (AFMH) has welcomed the Federal Government’s new Disability Peer Support and Connections Program, calling the $517 million investment a meaningful step toward building the community-based mental health infrastructure Australia urgently needs. The program, now open for applications, will fund organisations to deliver peer support, capacity building and community connection for Australians with disability under the age of 65, regardless of their eligibility for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). AFMH said the initiative reflects growing recognition that clinical services alone cannot meet the scale of Australia’s mental health challenge. “For too long, Australians living with disability,…

ACOSS concerned by predictions of rising unemployment in 2026

ACOSS is concerned by the possibility of rising unemployment and risks from any economic downturn by the end of the year, which could arise from the ongoing fuel crisis and its likely flow-on effects. “While the unemployment rate remains at 4.3% in today’s figures, some major banks and other forecasters are speculating that, depending on global events, the unemployment rate could rapidly rise, with some scenarios suggesting we could face an increase to between 5 and 6.5% by the end of this year if a downturn occurs. “This kind of increase could equate to a rise in unemployment of between…
