The jig is up: BHP should follow Qantas lead on Same Job Same Pay

Mining and Energy Union < 1 mins read

The Mining and Energy Union has today called on BHP to follow Qantas’s lead and stop fighting efforts to secure ‘Same Job Same Pay’ for labour hire workers.

“Congratulations to the Flight Attendants Association for their success in using new Same Job Same Pay laws to strike a deal with Qantas for pay rises and more permanent jobs for flight crew,” said MEU General Secretary Grahame Kelly.

“Flight crew and coal miners have shared the blight of labour hire exploitation in our industries. Qantas and BHP have been the biggest corporate drivers of this toxic and divisive employment model in Australia.

“It’s great to see that Qantas has accepted the jig is up. BHP is now the outlier and it’s time for them to do the same.”

The MEU has filed ten Same Job Same Pay applications for labour hire workers at BHP Queensland coal mines, including for workers employed by BHP subsidiary Operations Services. BHP has challenged the MEU’s applications.

Report on AI in education: GenAI growth outpacing safeguards for school staff and students

Wednesday 11 September 2024 Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is having a big impact on education. The IEU welcomes the federal government’s response, including the Study Buddy or Influencer report, released overnight. “This parliamentary report is crucial to guiding the safe and ethical use of GenAI in classrooms,” said IEUA NSW/ACT Branch Secretary Carol Matthews. “But the reality is that GenAI is outpacing efforts to provide a comprehensive regulatory response on behalf of teachers, school staff and students.” The 126-page report follows a 16-month Parliamentary Inquiry and contains 25 recommendations designed to take up the educational opportunities afforded by GenAI, while…

MEU General President Tony Maher said that continuing to stand together through the ACTU was the best path forward. “Sally McManus and Michele O’Neil continue to provide excellent leadership to our movement. “They have overseen a period of extraordinary wins for working people. “The ACTU has the full confidence of the MEU and the majority of the movement. “In a number of countries there are multiple peak councils. Australia has a proud tradition of…
