Thiess wins for diversity and inclusion

Thiess 2 mins read

Thiess is proud to announce that our Connect.Yarn.Grow (CYG) Indigenous employee conference was named winner in the Diversity and Inclusion category at this year's AREEA Awards, held in Brisbane on 27 August.

This award recognises our commitment to building authentic, and mutually beneficial relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Thiess understands the importance of listening to, and learning from, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations, and this was the key focus of CYG.

Reflecting on the award, Khyle Toomey, proud Kamilaroi man, and Thiess Health and Safety Officer said, “For me this award speaks to how far we’ve come as an organisation to engage with and listen to our Indigenous workforce. We still have a way to go, but we’ve made great progress. I’m proud to have been part of the CYG committee, and I can’t wait to see where we take it next year.”

As a RAP organisation for the past 13 years, our vision is to enable national reconciliation through our decisions and our actions each and every day.

Nevinia Davenport, Group Manager, Diversity & Inclusion, said, “We made a commitment in our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to do a better job of listening and consulting with our Indigenous employees.

“We wanted to do this in a meaningful and culturally appropriate manner. No small task when you consider the Thiess Group national footprint.”

Through the guidance of our RAP working group, site based yarning circles were conducted which helped inform the CYG conference. This was an opportunity to create connections, a sense of belonging, and for our business leaders to understand the lived experience of our Indigenous colleagues.

David Grieg, Group Executive, Australia West, and co-chair of Thiess’ Reconciliation Action Plan working group said, “Our Indigenous representation rate has grown by 19.5 per cent since December 2023, making Thiess one of the largest employers of Indigenous people in the mining sector nationally.

“We have clear direction on what we need to focus on to create a culturally safe workplace and we are committed to delivering this for all of our employees.”
