Unlocking Latrobe Valley’s Potential: The Power of Optimistic Leadership

The Centre for Optimism 2 mins read

Victor Perton, sometimes referred to as "That Optimism Man," will deliver a keynote address at the 2024 Latrobe City Business Festival's C3 Country City Connect in Traralgon tomorrow, Friday, 16 August. His key question to participants will be, "What makes you Optimistic?"

The Latrobe Valley Express has described Mr Perton as "a powerful force of positivity" and his upcoming speech is designed to inspire local leaders and businesses.

In Traralgon tomorrow, Victor Perton will champion the transformative power of optimism, focusing on its pivotal role in leadership, economic development, business resilience and personal health and wellbeing. His key messages include:

  • Australians seek infectious optimism in today's leaders. Victor Perton will articulate optimism as a desirable trait and a critical leadership skill that inspires confidence, resilience, and innovation.
  • Optimism drives economic development. As a former Trade and Investment Commissioner to the Americas, Perton believes that realistic optimism is a key to investment attraction and export growth and will highlight the link between a positive outlook and the economic prosperity of communities like Latrobe Valley.
  • Optimism is essential to business formation, strategy, innovation, transformation, and resilience. He will emphasise how an optimistic approach leads to better business strategies, fosters innovation, and strengthens businesses' resilience in the face of challenges.

His speech is intended to equip leaders with practical tools to cultivate and spread optimism. Victor will share some simple habits for being infectiously optimistic:

  • Walking around with a genuine smile and offering a cheery greeting to everyone you meet.
  • Replacing the usual "How are you?" with "What's been the best thing in your day?" in your greetings.
  • Choose optimists as your company and advisers.
  • Adding a question monthly to business meeting agendas, "What makes you Optimistic?"

He will also introduce two exercises proven to increase optimism: "What's Your Optimism Superpower?" which helps individuals identify and harness their unique strengths, and "My Best Self," a powerful reflection exercise designed to boost self-confidence and positive thinking.

Victor Perton will also encourage Latrobe Valley school leaders and teachers to heed the advice of the OECD by explicitly teaching optimism in the classroom and leading by example. The OECD research reveals that optimism is the key trait associated with life satisfaction. By fostering optimism in the next generation, these leaders can help shape resilient, creative, and positive future leaders.

Victor Perton's insights offer a fresh perspective on how optimism can be harnessed for growth and success in the Latrobe Valley and beyond. His speech is hoped to inspire business leaders and educators alike to adopt and model a more optimistic approach in their leadership and teaching.
