Australia’s wildlife needs a strong EPA

MEDIA STATEMENT: Australia’s wildlife needs a strong EPA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SYDNEY, 2 SEPTEMBER 2024 Humane Society International (HSI) Australia is deeply concerned over reports that the Prime Minister will weaken the proposed Environment Protection Australia (EPA) to appease big business and vested interests.

At a time when Australia should be strengthening its protection of wildlife and making good on its promise of no more extinctions, HSI Australia believes any weakening of a proposed strong and independent EPA is a backward step, and one that could have a negative and irreversible impact on our native wildlife.

Australia’s native animals are dependent on our decision makers for their survival. It is crucial the Prime Minister remains true to his word and elevates Australia to a position of global leadership regarding the protection of nature, and not one of leadership in modern day extinctions as we continue to neglect our native wildlife.

Ms Nicola Beynon, Head of Campaigns said:

“Australia’s native animals are in a David and Goliath battle with big business and vested interests. The Prime Minister must stand by his government’s promise to protect them with strong nature laws and an independent decision-making authority.”

We call on the Parliament to work together to strengthen the proposed EPA, and deliver a framework better equipped to tackle the extinction crisis.”

Next phase of Savanna Fire Management method strengthens integrity and supports scale of Indigenous-led carbon projects

Savanna fire management in Australia has entered its next phase, with the approval of updated settings under the ACCU scheme strengthening the integrity and scalability of one of the country’s most established carbon project types. The update, following review by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water(DCCEEW), reinforces the role of SFM as a proven, landscape-scale approach to emissions reduction and land management across northern Australia. The revision introduces more rigorous baselining, updated modelling and carbon accounting aligned with the latest scientific understanding of fire in savanna landscapes, and strengthened risk management settings, including buffers and updated…

Dial-A-Dump fined $30,000 for licence breach at Eastern Creek facility

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has fined Dial-A-Dump (EC) Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Bingo Industries Limited, $30,000 for a licence breach related to dust management. Following community complaints, EPA officers conducted an inspection of the Bingo Eastern Creek recycling facility on 11 March and observed intermittent dust emissions from a conveyor belt system at the rear of one of the processing buildings and accumulated dust, debris and litter on some machinery. NSW EPA Director of Operations Jacinta Hanemann said the EPA responded quickly by issuing a clean-up notice requiring the licensee to take action to deal with the…
