Celebrating Craftsmanship: Miami Bakehouse Earns 17 Medals at National Pie Competition

Miami Bakehouse 2 mins read

The Miami Bakehouse team of bakers is thrilled with their results at this year’s Great Aussie Pie Competition, held in Melbourne this week.

In a year with a record-breaking 1,700 entries from all around Australia, the team secured an impressive 17 medals from 17 entries including two sweet pie recipes.

This national competition, running since 1989, is renowned for its rigorous judging process.

The competition takes place across 4 days of assessment by more than 10 expert judges. Every pie entered undergoes intense scrutiny, with judges evaluating everything from appearance and pastry to the filling and overall creativity.

Each pie is examined based on:

  • Appearance: Presentation and overall appeal.
  • Pastry: The texture, flavour, and quality, including its ability to hold the filling without breaking.
  • Filling: Freshness, balance, and boldness of flavour, with a focus on originality.
  • Creativity: The use of both traditional and innovative ingredients to create something unique.

The Miami Bakehouse team submitted a range of their pie flavours including Ginger Chilli Pork; Garlic Prawn; Lamb Rogan Josh and Coconut Chicken Curry amongst it’s 17 entries.

The competition has added a sweet Apple Pie category, and Miami’s bakers entered two standout apple pies. The first was the fan-favourite Apple and Raspberry Pie, encased in their signature short-crust pastry, and the second was a brand-new creation, an Apple and Caramel Pie. This delicious new recipe is already generating a buzz in the bakery and the team hopes to bring it to their loyal customers very soon.

“These competitions are so much more than the chance to win awards, said David Palmer, Co- owner.

“They allow us to focus on honing our craft. The recipes we prepare, taste, and test during competition time help us perfect our pies for our customers, even when it’s just making small tweaks to how we bake.”

The team's drive for excellence is clear, and their success at this year’s event adds to Miami’s already impressive record of over 1,000 awards as they celebrate their 20th year of competing at the national level.

With another successful year of competitions behind them, the team is already looking ahead to new flavours for their recipe books to share with their customers.

ALNA backs new laws to protect jobs, small businesses and consumers from shadow-market lottery products

The Australian Lottery & Newsagents Association (ALNA) welcomes the Government’s announcement today to protect small business and consumers from shadow-market lottery products. Today’s release of draft legislation will close critical loopholes in the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (IGA) that have allowed these products to operate largely outside the regulatory frameworks that govern the broader lotteries industry. The measures – including prohibiting foreign matched lotteries - will protect the livelihoods of over 4000 small businesses across Australia, which rely on revenue from state-licenced lotteries. ALNA has been concerned that the unchecked growth of shadow-market lotteries and operators would potentially: Threaten the…
