CLIFTON SPRINGS ROADS AND STREETS NOW SAFER

Tuesday, 17 September 2024 2 mins read

A busy intersection in Clifton Springs is now safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers following upgrades funded through the Allan Labor Government’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

Construction of a roundabout and raised pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Bay Shore Avenue and Jetty Road is now complete and the speed limit has been made safer for drivers and pedestrians.

This project is the first to be completed as part of the Government’s $210 million Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, which partners with councils across Victoria to tackle road safety head-on, especially on high-risk local roads.

Councils are working closely with the Government to identify and carry out safer infrastructure upgrades funded under the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program. The City of Greater Geelong identified Bay Shore Avenue and Jetty Road in Clifton Springs as priority areas for upgrades.

Pedestrians and cyclists are now more visible at the intersection and are given priority to cross, vehicles must travel at a safer speed of 50 km/h.

Local government authorities own and operate 87 per cent of Victoria’s roads, and about 40 per cent of road trauma occurs on council-managed roads each year.

The Safe Local Roads and Streets Program will run until June 2027, working with every state local government to plan, design and deliver safety improvements on the highest-risk local roads, intersections, and precincts.

“We’re continuing to invest in road upgrades across Bellarine, including upgrades at this busy intersection in Clifton Springs which will improve safety for our drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, as well as boat users who are entering the harbour.”

Quote attributable to City of Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan

“We’re proud to make Bay Shore Avenue and Jetty Road - a very busy area in Clifton Springs - much safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. I appreciate the community’s patience while we carried out these essential works during the quietest tourist and boating periods.”

Survey shows increasing perception that corruption is a problem in Victoria

The Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) has released the results of its most recent ‘perceptions of corruption’ surveys revealing a widespread opinion that corruption occurs in Victoria and an increasing opinion that it poses a problem in the workplace and when bidding for government contracts. Over 9000 people participated in the surveys in 2024, with participants including state and local government employees, Victoria Police employees, business suppliers to government and the Victorian community. A previous survey to this group was conducted in 2022. The behaviours in the workplace identified as most likely to be a ‘high risk’ include breach of…

Victorian National Parks Association

Dingo decision window dressing while wildlife suffers

The Victorian National Parks Association (VNPA) is deeply disappointed by the Victorian government's decision to continue culling native Dingoes until 2028 despite their ecological importance and cultural significance to First Nations communities. The VNPA welcomes the end of the highly flawed bounty program that targeted Dingoes and the government’s small investment into non-lethal deterrents. The 11th-hour consultation process undertaken by the government was poor and left no room for all Victorians to contribute to the future of Dingoes in Victoria. The VNPA believes the decision was made prior to the full conclusion of the consultation process. VNPA condemns the continued…
