FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday 2 September 2024
Responding to reports the Albanese Government is drastically scaling back its own plans for fixing Australia’s national environment law, Climate Council Head of Policy and Advocacy Dr Jennifer Rayner said:
“Everyone from nature groups to big business knows Australia’s national environment law is broken. It is failing to protect our precious natural places and unique wildlife from the ravages of climate change and habitat loss, which are sending too many species to the brink of extinction.
“The Albanese Government promised comprehensive reform of this law, but now it seems nature will be left vulnerable with a weak environment protection agency and no further improvements to the law on the cards before the next election.
“This indecision has gone on long enough. The Albanese Government must commit to a clear, specific package of nature law reforms – with climate at its heart – and release this before the next election so everyone knows where they stand.
“All the government’s progress on renewable energy and to slash climate pollution will be undone if we don’t fix this law to accelerate responsible clean energy and industry, and reject polluting projects that will cause more climate harm.”
