The state’s most innovative engineers and engineering projects have been named at the 2024 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards – People and Projects Tasmania, held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Hobart on Friday night.
“Recognising the very best in engineering, the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards celebrate the innovative contributions engineers make to our daily lives. These awards offer engineers the chance to showcase their work while inspiring those who follow, helping to advance the profession for future generations.” said Engineers Australia General Manager – Tasmania, Darren Beattie.
Local winners will go on to represent their division at the national awards’ gala dinner on 21 November at the Brisbane City Hall.
Tasmania Project of the Year
Latrobe Township Flood Mitigation Project – BridgePro Engineering and Latrobe Council
The Latrobe Township Flood Mitigation Project provides a cost-effective and resilient solution to the town’s historic flood risk. BridgePro’s innovative design incorporated community consultation, leading to a cheaper and more aesthetically pleasing solution with enhanced flood mitigation performance. The integration of traditional and modern sustainable engineering practices exemplifies the core values of Engineers Australia, delivering a project that benefits both the local community and the environment.
Tasmania Professional Engineer of the Year:
Max Möller– Flussig Engineers
Max Möller is celebrated for his 25-year career in civil and hydraulic engineering, demonstrating exceptional vision and leadership. As the founder of a successful flood and hydraulic engineering firm, he has made significant contributions to community safety and development across Australia. His innovative use of UAV LiDAR systems for flood studies and dam assessments has enhanced risk management strategies. Mr Möller’s dedication to pro bono work and his involvement with Engineers Australia highlight his commitment to both the community and the advancement of the profession.
Tasmania Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year
Kate Hammerton – Entura
Kate Hammerton is an accomplished renewable energy engineer who has led energy modelling efforts across a range of mini-grid energy options and feasibility studies with Entura. Working across Tasmania, Australia, and the Pacific, Kate’s expertise in renewable energy systems is making a meaningful impact in addressing climate change. Her work as an owner’s engineer on large-scale renewable energy projects demonstrates her ability to manage multi-disciplinary teams effectively. Kate is also recognised for her commitment to inspiring students to pursue STEM careers.
