Fun, free things to do these school holidays

City of Sydney 2 mins read

If your kids like to run, ride and read, check out what they can do for free in the City of Sydney during the spring school holidays.

Parks and playgrounds

There are lots of great parks and playgrounds across the inner city. With more than 400 parks to choose from, you can spend an afternoon at one of our expansive green spaces or visit your local pocket park. We’ve just finished renewing Woolloomooloo Playground so drop by for a spin in the hamster wheel.

Skate parks and cycling tips

If you’re on track for more adventure, we’ve got epic skate parks at Sydney and Federal parks. The bike track at Sydney Park is another fun option. Free balance bike clinics for 3 to 8-year-olds and their carers also run from Monday 30 September to Friday 4 October at Sydney Park.

Sydney City Farm

Enjoy a free, seasonal guided walk at Sydney City Farm at Sydney Park from 1pm on Saturday 5 October. See what fresh food our volunteers are planting and discover herbs, vegies, flowers and fruits ready for harvest.

Libraries

Our state-of-the-art library facilities provide respite from busy city living with books, games, toys and puzzles available to borrow. We’ve also got free sessions during the holidays where kids can plant seeds or make bird feeders, wind chimes and macrame keyrings. Catch our last couple of HSC study nights at Green Square Library too.

Self-guided walks

Set your own pace and take in Sydney’s sights using our Culture Walks app. Get your history, art or architectural fix on self-guided walking tours curated by the City of Sydney.

Neighbourhood street celebrations

Our Sydney Streets events are fun days out for the family featuring live music, business pop-ups, entertainers, kids activities and alfresco dining. Macleay Street in Potts Point will close to traffic from 11am to 1pm on Saturday 28 September with Glebe Point Road following suit on Saturday 12 October.

Back to Basics This Christmas – A Call for Kindness and Connection

After a challenging year marked by cost-of-living pressures, social media age restrictions and global instability, Australian families are being encouraged to give the gift of kindness and connection this Christmas. Leading child protection organisation Act for Kids says the festive season offers a timely opportunity to get back to basics and focus on what matters most. A recent Act for Kids survey of 300 children aged 10 to 16 across Australia found an overwhelming three in four children (76 per cent) felt most connected to their family when doing something as simple as talking in person about their day. Helping young adults rethink uncertainty reduces anxiety and depression: study

Finding uncertainty hard to tolerate is linked to poorer mental health among young adults, and a short course addressing this has shown promising results. A single 20 to 30-minute online course can help young adults become more tolerant of uncertainty and less anxious and depressed, a study led by UNSW Sydney psychologists has found. And the improved mental health effects were still evident at least a month after completing the course. The study, which was published today in the journal Psychological Medicine, comes at a time when young adults face persistent uncertainty – from the pandemic to global instability to…
