The Northern Territories most innovative engineers and engineering projects have been named at the 2024 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards – People and Projects Northern, held at the Doubletree by Hilton Darwin on Friday night.
“Celebrating innovation and dedication Engineers Australia Excellence Awards showcase the impact of engineers on society. By acknowledging their work, we offer a platform for them to inspire future talent and reinforce the importance of engineering in building a better future,” said Engineers Australia General Manager –NT, Jennifer Jan.
Local winners will go on to represent their division at the national awards’ gala dinner on 21 November at the Brisbane City Hall.
Northern Project of the Year
Katherine PFAS Water Treatment Plant
Power and Water Corporation Northern Territory
This innovative project addressed the global issue of PFAS-contaminated drinking water through a permanent Ion Exchange treatment system. The project’s success was bolstered by its excellence in community engagement, raising awareness of water conservation and restoring public confidence. Engineers Australia congratulates Power and Water, ECT2, and the Katherine community on this groundbreaking achievement, with the hope that it inspires future water treatment solutions globally.
Northern Professional Engineer of the Year:
Associate Professor Erwin Chan – Charles Darwin University
Associate Professor Erwin Chan, a leading expert in fibre optics and photonics, is recognised for his extensive contributions to electrical and electronics engineering and achievements in applying research to real-world challenges. With over 140 widely cited publications, Associate Professor Chan’s research has made a significant impact on industry and defence sectors. He is highly regarded for his collaborative approach, forging long-term partnerships with universities and organisations worldwide.
Northern Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year
Georgina Catto-Smith – Jacobs Engineering Group
Georgina Catto-Smith's dedication to improving social outcomes through engineering has earned her the 2024 Engineers Australia Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year award- Northern. Her involvement in the innovative design and construction of water treatment facilities has rewarded her with leadership roles across Australian Water Associations. With a “you get out what you put in” mindset, Georgina volunteers her time to STEM programmes, Jacobs Women, and Engineers Without Borders.
