Pepper Press 2 mins read

The Bipolar Runner
By Jacqui Louise Swallow
11 October 2024, Pepper Press
RRP:  $29.99

Jacqui Louise Swallow has spent her life confronting the challenges of living with bipolar disorder.

From overwhelming anxiety to paralysing depression to tumultuous manic episodes, Jacqui’s journey has been anything but easy.

Yet the one thing that has consistently helped her find focus and hope has been running.

What began as a few tentative steps—often through tears and exhaustion—has become a potent tool for managing her mental health and living her best life.

In 2023, Jacqui achieved something extraordinary by completing the Melbourne Marathon, which, at her pace, demanded six hours of continuous running. Completing the race also proved to Jacqui that she could overcome the barriers of mental illness and achieve something exceptional.

“For me, running is more than just physical activity—it’s a lifeline,” says Jacqui. “It has helped me more than medication, practising gratitude, or mindfulness. It is where I find my strength, inner peace, and resilience.”

The Bipolar Runner recounts Jacqui’s journey from embarking on her quest to completing the race and beyond through her contemporary diary notes. It is raw, honest, and ultimately uplifting.

It is also a fly-on-the-wall account of understanding the impact of bipolar disorder on those who have it or those who love and care for someone who has it.

Monash expert: Author John Marsden’s legacy

Award-winning Australian author JohnMarsden, best known for his multimillion-selling Tomorrow series, has died aged 74. DrPenni Russon, Senior Lecturer, Literary Studies, Faculty of Arts Contact: +61 423 873 770 or penni.russon@monash.edu Comments attributable to DrRusson: “It was the Tomorrow series that hooked me: afternoons spent as a 20-something in the Northcote library, reading compulsively. As a children’s writer and creative writing teacher, I’ve tried to stay loyal to that young-adult self, who couldn’t stop turning the pages. He helped me understand what young-adult fiction could do to counteract negative or cynical stories about 'young people today'. “Marsden’s Tomorrow books emerged…

Monash expert: Remembering Michael Leunig

Australian cartoonist, poet and writer Michael Leunig has died aged 79. His death was announced on social media: "The pen has run dry, its ink no longer flowing – yet Mr Curly and his ducks will remain etched in our hearts, cherished and eternal." Dr AliAlizadeh, Senior Lecturer, Literary Studies, Faculty of Arts Contact: +61 435 230 249 or Ali.Alizadeh@monash.edu Comments attributable to Dr Alizadeh: “Leunig was a truly strange, contradictory artist. A political cartoonist who despised politics, a poet whose poems were shamelessly unpoetic, a moralist who offended moralists, a mainstream media celebrity amidst the decline of mainstream media.’’…

LIFELINE IS HERE TO PROVIDE CONNECTION AND SUPPORT OVER BUSY FESTIVE SEASON AHEAD

As Lifeline prepares for further increases in demand over the weeks ahead, they are reminding Australians not to hesitate to reach out for support if they are experiencing loneliness and in need of connection. Dr Anna Brooks, Chief Research Officer of the Lifeline Research Office says loneliness and social isolation can be brought about – or exacerbated - by several factors. “While help seekers might not necessarily describe what they are experiencing as ‘feeling lonely’, many of the conversations with our Crisis Supporters reveal a sense of isolation and disconnection. This can be particularly prevalent over the Christmas period.” “Significant…
