RARE 1970s ICONIC ITALIAN MOTORCYLE SETS NEW AUSTRALIAN AUCTION RECORD

Donington Auctions 2 mins read

Late yesterday afternoon, auction records were smashed at the Donington Auctions ‘Collector Motorcycle Auction’, which achieved just under $800,000 under the hammer, with a 97% lot clearance rate.

“People are looking for unique investment opportunities outside of more traditional avenues like real estate or shares, and particularly investments they can enjoy.  We see items of quality and rarity bucking the trends and still performing well in the current market”  said Cameron Sabine from Donington Auctions.

The auction saw competitive bidding on a fully restored 1973 MV Agusta 750 S [Lot 10] which sold for a groundbreaking $151,000, being a new Australian auction record for the revered make. A mere 556 examples of this model were produced between 1970 – 1975, which equates to less than three a week.

“People are looking for unique investment opportunities outside of more traditional avenues like real estate or shares, and particularly investments they can enjoy.  We see items of quality and rarity bucking the trends and still performing well in the current market” Donington Auctions’ Cameron Sabine said.

Another Italian exotic performance motorcycle from the 1970s, a 1976 Ducati 900SS [Lot 27] saw three bidders locked in a bidding war, and the bike was sold for $70,000.

A 1972 Triumph X75 Hurricane 750 [Lot 13] sold for $40,000, which is one of the most iconic bike designs of the 20th century and was influenced by the groundbreaking movie ‘Easy Rider’, starring Peter Fonda.

Other highlights include a cute little 1961 Vespa VBB 150 with Sidecar [Lot 34] which achieved a staggering $27,250, while an exceptionally restored Japanese classic, a 1974 Kawasaki H2 Mach IV 750 [Lot 19] set a new auction benchmark selling for $35,500.
