Reel in the school holiday fun: build a “fish hotel” and restore habitat at Copeton Waters

OzFish Unlimited 3 mins read

Looking for some free outdoor excitement and family fishing fun in NSW this Spring school holidays – that will also teach kids how to care for the environment?

OzFish and Reflections Holidays are teaming up to deliver a fun-packed day of fishing and habitat creation at beautiful Copeton Waters, 10am–3pm, Wednesday, October 2, 2024.  All materials and a free lunch will be provided, for those who register.

OzFish Murray Darling Basin Program Manager Braeden Lampard said: “Families can build fish hotels, cleanup the ecosystem and catch native fish. The event will be a perfect opportunity to join like-minded people who share a love for fishing and a commitment to ensuring sustainable fisheries into the future.”

Fish hotels are an innovative design of wooden construction, that resembles a hashtag (#). They consist of criss-crossed wooden beams placed to create a complex system of habitat that sits on the riverbed. Made from natural materials, they are environmentally friendly and a perfect location for native fish to inhabit.

Reflections CEO Nick Baker said the school holiday activity at Reflections Copeton was a chance for children to not only have fun and spend time with their family, but an opportunity to learn the importance of protecting waterways and fish habitats.

“This is a fantastic event that creates a window for families to get together in nature and work together to nurture the environment, and we’re grateful to our partners, OzFish, for hosting these activities in our beautiful park,” Mr Baker said.

Braeden said: “Our partnership with Reflections Holidays is about getting people outdoors and creating events that provide the opportunity to restore habitats and enjoy recreational fishing at its finest.”

VEOLIA DIRECTED TO MANAGE DAM STORAGE CAPACITY

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issued Veolia Environmental Services (Australia) Pty Ltd a Clean-Up Notice to reduce the levels of leachate stored in dams at the Woodlawn Landfill within the Eco Precinct in Tarago. Kids should play outside more to reduce the risk of short-sightedness and potential adult blindness

We are in the grips of a ‘myopia epidemic’: more than 20 per cent of Australians have myopia or short-sightedness, tipped to rise to 50 per cent by 2050. The condition typically develops during school years and, in severe cases, can lead to blindness. Children with early-onset myopia are at highest risk. Children’s eye health is the theme of World Sight Day on Thursday 10 October. For most people, with myopia, being short-sighted is an inconvenience. However, for some, myopia can lead to blindness. Ahead of World Sight Day (10 October), researchers at the Lions Eye Institute have some eye-opening…

Ageism Awareness Day is tomorrow (9 Oct)

Ageism Awareness Day, initiated by EveryAGE Counts and now marked in many countries around the world, is on tomorrow 9 October. EveryAGE Counts is Australia’s national coalition of organisations and individuals committed to end ageism in Australia. Ageism is stereotyping, discrimination and mistreatment of older people based solely on their age and will impact on all Australians as they age. Ageism disempowers and damages many older people as they age and the World Health Organisation has stated that ageism may reduce life span by 7 years. Ageism is a matter of growing concern and our research shows that: • 68%…
