Take control in an emergency to keep yourself, your family, friends and neighbours safe

Willoughby City Council < 1 mins read

With disasters becoming more frequent, it has never been more important to get prepared.

Willoughby City Council is encouraging residents to prepare and complete an emergency plan on the Get Prepared app as part of the Red Cross Emergency Ready Week from 16 – 22 September.

The Get Prepared app is a free, user-friendly tool that helps residents connect with key support contacts, assess local risks and create a comprehensive emergency plan. It allows users to establish a support network, complete preparedness tasks and save their plan as a PDF for easy sharing.

As part of Council’s Resilient Willoughby Strategy and Action Plan, Willoughby City residents can access a suite of resources on Council’s website, designed to provide critical preparedness information and to engage the area’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Resources on the Resilient Willoughby page cover a range of topics from bushfire and smoke to extreme heat, flooding and storms. Resources have also been prepared to specifically assist multicultural communities plan for emergencies, including flyers translated into simplified Chinese and Korean.

Willoughby City Council General Manager Hugh Phemister encouraged residents to use Emergency Ready Week to consider their homes and their plan of action.

“As we’ve seen in recent years, weather continues to become more volatile in the Sydney region and summers especially vary wildly between intense rain or intense heat,” said Mr Phemister.

“I encourage you to use the resources prepared by the Red Cross and Council staff to assess your plan for an emergency – whether it’s a bushfire or a storm – and make sure you feel well prepared for such an event.”
