Victoria punches above its weight in HAFF allocation

CHIA Vic 2 mins read

Victoria will deliver thousands of new social and affordable homes under round one of the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF), a development that the state’s peak body for community housing has described as a win for the community.

This week, the federal government announced it will deliver more than 13,700 social and affordable homes through the first round of the HAFF and National Housing Accord programs.

New figures from Housing Australia reveal 4,135 of these homes will be in Victoria - the largest allocation for any state and territory, and representing 30 per cent of the Australian total.

“It’s heartening to see that in the middle of a housing crisis Victoria is receiving thousands of additional desperately needed social and affordable homes thanks to this housing fund,” Community Housing Industry Association Victoria acting chief executive Jason Perdriau said.

“This is a win for Victoria that comes at a critical time as the housing crisis tightens its grip on the state. Having thousands of additional social and affordable homes will be life changing for many Victorians and improve the liveability of our communities.

“Securing the largest allocation of homes from the first round of this fund reflects the capacity and strength of Victoria’s community housing sector which has grown as a result of the Victorian Government’s Big Housing Build.

“Our not-for-profit sector is raring to deliver the homes that Victorians need. Bids for HAFF projects from Victoria’s community housing organisations for round one alone demonstrates strong capacity to build so it’s great to see applications for round two will open within months.

“The Housing Australia Future Fund is a great and significant step to address the housing crisis - we hope to see the Commonwealth double down on this investment and help deliver more social and affordable housing in the years to come.”

MEDIA RELEASE: PRODUCTIVITY COMMISSION’S EARLY CHILDHOOD REPORT SIGNALS A HUGE STEP FORWARD FOR AUSTRALIA

The Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) welcomes the Productivity Commission’s Early Childhood Education and Care inquiry final report. The report is a huge step forward for Australia. If implemented, the recommendations would benefit the children, households and communities BSL works with every day – many of whom experience disadvantage and/or intergenerational poverty. Importantly, the Productivity Commission recognises the value of early childhood development for all children, whatever their background, and that our investment in children has benefits that multiply across their lifetimes and across generations. This is economic and social reform of the highest order. As a country, we have…
