AUSTRALIA’S TOUGHEST TEAM ENDURANCE EVENT, THE KOKDOA CHALLENGE, COMES TO LAKE MACQUARIE THIS SATURDAY

The Kokoda Challenge 2 mins read

The Kokoda Challenge is returning to Lake Macquarie this Saturday 12th October, 2024. Building on last year’s incredible success, where 500 participants raised over $90,000, this year’s challenge promises to be even bigger, with more teams taking on the epic journey through the rugged trails of Olney State Forest and Watagans National Park.

In honour of the Australian Diggers who fought in the legendary Kokoda Campaign of 1942, teams of 2-5 participants will choose to hike or trail run the 18km, 30km, and 48km course that consists of over 1,400 metres of elevation. Whether they hike or run, every step supports a mission that goes beyond the finish line: changing the lives of Australian youth through life-changing programs.

Organised by the Kokoda Youth Foundation, The Kokoda Challenge has raised funds to support life-changing programs since 2004 for hundreds of disadvantaged youth, instilling the values of the Kokoda Spirit: Courage, Endurance, Mateship, and Sacrifice.

Kokoda Youth Foundation Founder and Vietnam Veteran, Doug Henderson said the Kokoda Youth Programs are about providing disadvantaged and disengaged youth with the appropriate tools to realise their full potential by instilling the values of the Kokoda Spirit.

“With one in ten Australian youths at risk of disengaging from education or employment, our programs are vital for giving them the tools they need to thrive. The Kokoda Challenge offers every participant the chance to make a lasting, positive impact on a young person's life,” said Doug.

Whether you're an experienced trail runner or just love a weekend hike, The Kokoda Challenge welcomes everyone to be part of this unforgettable experience. Hikers and runners alike will face relentless hills and navigate through the night, united by a shared purpose—to give back to our youth.

The event kicks off with a special memorial service at the starting line to honour the Kokoda veterans and all service men and women. Spectators are encouraged to join this moving tribute and cheer on the teams as they set off on their epic journey.

Australians urged to give in final three days of Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal

Australia, 21 December 2025 – With just three days to go until Christmas Eve, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is asking every community to come together and donate — as 1.7 million Australians will rely on the kindness of strangers to receive a gift under the tree — and every contribution helps make Christmas brighter for those in need. The 2025 Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal officially launched in early November at Parliament House, where the Prime Minister joined Kmart Group and The Salvation Army to place the first gifts under the Wishing Tree. Since then, the Appeal has gathered momentum…
