Builders support the Opposition’s supply-focused housing policies

Peak building and construction industry association Master Builders Australia today backs new Federal Opposition housing policies to boost housing supply.

As the only industry association representing the residential, commercial, and civil construction sectors, Master Builders acutely understands the extent to which all three sectors have a role in ending the housing crisis.

Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton announced an elected Coalition Government will commit $5 billion, through a new Housing Infrastructure Programme, to enable critical infrastructure.

Master Builders CEO Denita Wawn said: “We know that the key to ending the housing crisis is unlocking new housing supply, but there are a lot of barriers standing in the way of rolling projects out.”

“Over the last five years, construction costs have increased by 40 per cent and build times have blown out by up to 47 per cent.

“Labour shortages, access to water, sewerage, power and roads, union disruption, and red tape all significantly impact the final project cost and build time.”

The Opposition also announced a freeze to the National Construction Code (NCC) alongside a review of NCC changes to identify options to further reduce red tape.

“A pause on unnecessary code changes that increase cost and complexity without meaningful improvements in standards is a positive step,” Ms Wawn added.

“The proposed review will provide an opportunity for industry to be heard on perverse outcomes of recent changes that were introduced without proper consideration of the evidence and the implementation hurdles facing builders,” Ms Wawn concluded.

Rising Tide protesters crash Dutton’s Lowy speech

SYDNEY, Thursday 20 March - Protesters from Rising Tide have today interrupted Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s appearance at the Sydney headquarters of the Lowy Institute, brandishing a banner reading “NUCLEAR LIES COST US ALL”. Rising Tide protesters Zack Schofield and Nigel Cox unfurled the banner, asking Mr Dutton “why are you lying to the Australian People” before being escorted out of the building by Federal Police and security. “The Coalition’s scheme to force nuclear into Australia’s energy grid is going to cost $600 billion to the taxpayer, add up to $1,200 to people’s energy bills, and produce 1.6 billion tonnes…

Bushfire Survivors call for stronger action from political leaders on climate resilience

Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action (BSCA) welcomes policies such as the Climate Resilience Plan announced earlier today by federal independent MP Zali Steggall, which proposes a practical way forward to ensuring climate readiness across Australia, but says stronger action is needed from all political parties. The plan announced today by Ms Steggall proposes establishing a $10 billion fund to support communities and homes to be better prepared for climate damage by diverting taxpayer funded subsidies away from carbon polluting fossil fuel industries and into vital initiatives like prioritising resilient infrastructure. BSCA CEO Serena Joyner said: “Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action…

ANGLICARE SYDNEY COMMENT ON MEAGRE INCREASE TO JOBSEEKER

20 March 2025 ANGLICARE SYDNEY COMMENT ON MEAGRE INCREASE TO JOBSEEKER Anglicare Sydney is disappointed in the meagre increase to JobSeeker announced today. Anglicare Sydney has seen demand for its food and financial assistance services increase by 25% over the past year, illustrating how cost of living is pushing people to breaking point. Simon Miller, CEO of Anglicare Sydney said just 0.2% of listed rentals in Sydney were affordable for those on income support and this below inflation increase would not make any meaningful impact. “We’re calling on the Government to increase the rate of Job Seeker at least $80…
