“Humanitarian catastrophe” unfolding in Lebanon, Aotearoa New Zealand for UNHCR warns

Aotearoa New Zealand for UNHCR 2 mins read

Aotearoa New Zealand for UNHCR is urgently calling for increased support as the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon continues to grow.

Lebanese government officials estimate that one million people are affected in Lebanon. UNHCR is ramping up its efforts to deliver critical aid to refugees and displaced people.

The most pressing needs include access to safe shelters, emergency supplies such as blankets and mattresses, healthcare, food, cash and protection services.

Trudi Mitchell, spokesperson for Aotearoa New Zealand for UNHCR, said New Zealanders have already shown strong support for those affected, but increased funding is urgently needed to meet the fast-growing humanitarian crisis.

“A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in Lebanon right now. The streets of Beirut are filled with people struggling to find shelters for their families, and we are hearing reports of newly displaced Syrians and Lebanese having to sleep in the open,” said Ms Mitchell.

“I would like to extend my deepest thanks to New Zealanders for their support over the past week.

“UNHCR’s life-saving work on the ground right now is only possible through the generosity of donors. But more help is urgently needed to support those who have lost so much.”

UNHCR’s teams are working tirelessly to provide critical support and relief to those affected. The response has been significantly scaled up since 23 September.

Prior to the latest escalation of hostilities, UNHCR has been operating in Lebanon for 60 years, responding to the humanitarian needs of displaced people and refugees around the country.

Lebanon hosts an estimated 1.5 million Syrian refugees and over 11,000 refugees from other countries, making it one of the largest refugee-hosting nations per capita in the world.

Australians urged to give in final three days of Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal

Australia, 21 December 2025 – With just three days to go until Christmas Eve, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is asking every community to come together and donate — as 1.7 million Australians will rely on the kindness of strangers to receive a gift under the tree — and every contribution helps make Christmas brighter for those in need. The 2025 Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal officially launched in early November at Parliament House, where the Prime Minister joined Kmart Group and The Salvation Army to place the first gifts under the Wishing Tree. Since then, the Appeal has gathered momentum…
