Ms. Nikita Porwal has been crowned Miss India 2024 and will go on to represent India at the Miss World contest. In the Australian-Indian film ‘Barber of Baadarpur’ (‘Chambal Paar’ in India) Nikita appears in the lead female role. This is her debut film appearance and only feature film to date. The makers of ‘Barber of Baadarpur’ are very proud of Nikita and congratulate her on this wonderful achievement.

Devendra Parmar who lives in Byron Bay, NSW has written, co-directed & co-produced this film with his brother Sanjeev Rajsingh Parmar who is an established costume designer in Bollywood, India. Sanjeev’s work has received critical acclaim and he was nominated in the prestigious Filmfare Awards for his costume design on the YRF, India film ‘Samrat Prithviraj’. As casting director of ‘Barber of Baadarpur’, Sanjeev immediately realised Nikita’s immense potential when casting her as the lead actress for the film.

Nikita’s natural portrayal of a village girl in 1980s rural India in ‘Barber of Baadarpur’ showcases her instinctive acting talent.  Dedicated to animal welfare, Nikita is also committed to furthering her acting career, expressing a desire to work with the celebrated film maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

The film’s editor Aseem Sinha has worked extensively with the renowned film maker Shyam Benegal in his many landmark films including ‘Zubeidaa’ and ‘Mujib - The Making of a Nation’.

The film making vision of brothers Devendra and Sanjeev is to portray the culturally rich Indian village life in its authenticity. Village culture is succumbing to fast paced economic growth and needs to preserved in the medium of film. The stunningly beautiful film score is comprised entirely of original music, including Brij folk and Indian classical traditions.

Inspired by true stories and characters, this independent film was financed by film lovers from the Northern Rivers region of NSW and was shot in India in 2023. The world premiere of ‘Barber of Baadarpur’ took place at the 2024 Stuttgart Indian Film Festival in Germany and is expected to be released in India and Australia early next year.
