National groups call for legislation to measure and end child poverty in Australia

Anti-Poverty Week 2 mins read
As the nation experiences our worst cost of living and housing crisis an increasing number of children are living in poverty.

Researchers have predicted that Australia’s child poverty rate could surpass the current rate of 17%, or 1 in 6 children, but the true nature isn’t known because Australia doesn’t define, measure or report child poverty rates.

The latest analysis from the End Child Poverty campaign on 2021 data found the number of children living in poverty has increased by at least 102,000 since COVID.

The lifelong effects of poverty on a child’s mental health, relationships, job and economic outcomes are far poorer for children who grow up in poverty.

‘On Your Terms’ – national survey to strengthen sex and consent education

The Australian Human Rights Commission will today launch On Your Terms, a national survey of young people to help inform improvements to consent, respectful relationships and sex education in Australia. National Children’s Commissioner Deb Tsorbaris said: ‘We know this topic can be difficult for some people to talk about. We’re inviting young people to do this anonymous survey and share their views and experiences. Their voice will help improve consent education, so it is relevant, timely and helpful for young people. ‘We need to hear from young people and meet them where they’re at with real life, useful education to…

Oxfam Australia reaction to Senate Inquiry into the Capital Gains Tax discount report

A Senate inquiry report released today has added fresh momentum to calls for reform of the capital gains tax (CGT) discount, said Oxfam Australia, amid growing evidence the policy disproportionately benefits wealthy investors and worsens inequality. The inquiry’s findings reflect long-standing concerns that the tax system is allowing large concessions on investment income while many Australians face rising living costs and housing pressures. It also found that the benefits of the capital gains tax discount are unequally distributed, with implications for income and wealth inequality and intergenerational inequality. Oxfam Australia Chief ExecutiveJennifer Tierney said thereport should promptserious considerationof reforms to…
