Peter Dutton hates the reality of renewable energy, but loves the fantasy of nuclear reactors

Climate advocacy organisation Solutions for Climate Australia called out Federal Liberal leader Peter Dutton for again attacking renewable energy, this time visiting Western Australia, to object to offshore wind projects in the state, while privately promoting nuclear reactors.

“Again we have the ridiculous situation where the Federal Liberal Party is committing to stop clean renewable energy projects, instead locking in more expensive and climate polluting gas and coal, while pinning their hopes on ultra-expensive and toxic nuclear reactors that will probably never be built,” said Dr Barry Traill, Director of Solutions for Climate Australia.

“Mr Dutton’s visit to Western Australia has descended into farce. He held a private meeting about this proposed nuclear reactor in Collie, but scurried out of town after refusing to meet with Traditional Owners who sought to speak with him about his proposal for a nuclear reactor on their land.

“We call on Mr Dutton and the Federal Coalition to face the reality that Australia is already powered by 40% renewable energy, and support the inevitable transition to clean, renewable power. Nuclear reactors are a fantasy, not a climate policy that will reduce climate pollution this decade,” finished Dr. Traill.

Today’s indexation fails to meet needs amid escalating crisis

Youth Allowance for a single person living away from home is only going up by $1.70 a day. This lifts Youth Allowance and Austudy to a mere $47 a day, which is 36% of the minimum wage. Some income support payments including Youth Allowance and Austudy are adjusted for inflation on January 1 each year.…
