Queensland first state to abolish patient tax

Royal Australian College of GPs 2 mins read
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has praised the Queensland Government for committing to exempt GPs from payroll tax if re-elected, making general practice more affordable for all Queenslanders.

RACGP Health Spokesperson Dr Bruce Willett praised Queensland as the first state to take action to alleviate pressure on general practice through an earlier tax ruling.

“Queensland was the first state to issue a new Revenue Office ruling after the RACGP warned that a new interpretation of payroll tax could risk widespread practice closures and increase out-of-pocket costs for patients,” he said.

“I’m pleased the Government has continued to listen to the concerns of its healthcare professionals and announced these further steps to create a better health system for all.

“General practices run on very thin margins. Our surveys found that only 3% of practices could absorb the costs of payroll tax on independent GPs. The rest would be forced to pass the cost on to patients.

“This important step by the Queensland Government ensures practices remain viable and GP care stays affordable.

“The Government’s commitment match's the LNP undertaking, meaning that no matter who wins the next election, Queensland GPs now have certainty their patients won’t be hit with higher out of pocket costs as a result of this tax. That’s great news for Queensland patients.

“There is no substitute for the quality care you get from a GP who knows you and your history. We commend the Government for ensuring GPs can continue to play their role in helping people stay healthy, stay out of hospital, and reduce pressure on our health system.”

City GPs are ready to work in rural communities – they just need funding for travel and training: RACGP

Rural patients could have greater access to general practice care for less than $3 million per year under a Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) budget proposal. The Pathways to Rural program would fund GPs from major cities to spend four weeks per year providing care in the country, allowing them to trial rural general practice, build ongoing relationships with patients and communities, and train in the medical skills they most need. For practices unable to source enough specialist GPs to meet community needs or cover staff during leave and illness, Pathways to Rural would cut the cost of expensive…

Medical colleges unite to improve specialist access and affordability for all Australians

At a time when Australians are increasingly concerned about access to specialist care, including out-of-pocket costs and unexpected bills, Australia’s 16 specialist medical colleges have come together on a combined national framework on ethical billing and patient protection. The Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC) launched its national Professionalism Framework on ethical billing and fee transparency at Parliament House today. The Framework was launched by CPMC Chair Associate Professor Kerin Fielding and the Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon.Rebecca White MP. The framework establishes shared expectations for ethical billing, fee transparency, and informed financial consent –…
