Rock For Recovery in Young to showcase local music and mental health awareness

Flourish Australia 2 mins read

Live music, classic cars and motorbikes, and a huge range of other family entertainment will be on show at the Rock for Recovery event in Young.

On Sunday October 27, Flourish Australia will host the free community celebration for all ages to mark Mental Health Month.

Live music acts will headline the day at the PCYC Young netball courts.

"Rock for Recovery is an opportunity to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, bring the community together, and provide a platform for open conversations," Flourish Australia Young Team Coordinator Casey Wilton said.

“We believe that by creating a lively, positive space like Rock for Recovery, we can connect people to vital mental health resources in a way that feels approachable and engaging."

The event will feature a diverse lineup of local bands performing throughout the day, guest speakers, and stalls hosted by Flourish Australia’s mental health workers, peer workers, and local service providers.

Families can also enjoy a jumping castle, face painting, and a visit from an ice-cream truck.

Car and bike enthusiasts will be treated to a show and shine event, with the community voting on the best vehicles on display.

There will also be two vibrant dance performances, including Canberra’s ‘Chinese Dragon Dancing Group’ and the local ‘Leanne Simms Academy of Dance.’

“We hope that Rock for Recovery will become a beloved annual event where people can not only enjoy great music and activities but also feel supported in their mental health journey,” Ms Wilton added.

“This is about celebrating the strength of our community, raising awareness, and making sure people know that help is available.”

As a highlight of the day, guest speakers will present an award for the best performance.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cook MLA will be among the guest speakers, along with Flourish Australia staff and an R U OK representative.

Thanks to the support of SWS Bank, Rock for Recovery aims to be a cornerstone event for Mental Health Month in the region.

Helping young adults rethink uncertainty reduces anxiety and depression: study

Finding uncertainty hard to tolerate is linked to poorer mental health among young adults, and a short course addressing this has shown promising results. And the improved mental health effects were still evident at least a month after completing the course. The study, which was published today in the journal Psychological Medicine, comes at a time when young adults face persistent uncertainty – from the pandemic to global instability to…
