SYDNEY’S TRANSPORT HISTORY COMES TO LIFE AT CENTRAL THIS WEEKEND

Transport Heritage NSW 2 mins read

Sydney’s Central Station will step back in time as the annual Transport Heritage Expo returns this October long weekend (5 – 7 October 2024).

Visitors will have a wide range of experiences to choose from, with heritage train, bus, and steamboat rides operating across the city, along with unique offerings at Central Station, including tours of the iconic Central Station clock tower and tea aboard a 1960s dining carriage.

“The Transport Heritage Expo is a rare and exciting opportunity for people to immerse themselves in our state’s rich transport history,” said Transport Heritage NSW CEO, Andrew Moritz.

“Already over 6,000 tickets have been sold and we expect to reach a record 11,000 by the weekend.”

Transport Heritage Expo 2024 highlights include:

  • Heritage Train Rides: Enjoy a 1-hour steam train ride to Hurstville and back, experience a vintage electric train, take a tour of the Botany freight line on a timber-bodied railmotor, or ride through the underground and across the Harbour Bridge on a 1970s silver electric train to Lavender Bay.
  • Vintage Bus Rides: Take a 30-minute round trip around Sydney’s CBD aboard a beautifully restored double-decker bus from the Sydney Bus Museum.
  • Harbour Steam Cruises: Set sail on a 45-minute harbour cruise aboard the Waratah or Lady Hopetoun, two 120-year-old Sydney Harbour veterans (tickets sold out).
  • Central Clock Tower Tours: Climb the iconic Central Station Clock Tower—but act fast, tickets for this experience are extremely limited (tickets sold out).
  • 1960s Dining Car Experience: Enjoy a 1-hour tea sitting aboard the Southern Aurora, featuring freshly brewed teas, pastries, finger sandwiches, and scones in a nostalgic 1960s dining carriage.
  • Driver’s Cab Visits and Heritage Displays: Step into the driver’s cab of a vintage diesel locomotive or a modern NR class loco from Pacific National. Explore a collection of heritage carriages and locomotives or relax and enjoy the live atmosphere as heritage trains arrive and depart Central Station throughout the weekend.
