Union calls for 12 days reproductive leave to mark World Menopause Day

Health Services Union < 1 mins read

The Health Services Union (HSU) is calling for 12 days of reproductive leave to support workers experiencing menopause and other reproductive health challenges.

On World Menopause Day, The HSU is advocating for this critical workplace reform to address the often overlooked impact of menopause on employees' health and productivity.

Reproductive health leave would cover IVF, severe menstrual pain, endometriosis, vasectomies, menopause, gender transitioning therapies and other health issues.

The HSU’s campaign calls on the Federal Government to make the 12-day entitlement part of the national employment standards, which set minimum conditions for workers.

HSU National Senior Assistant Secretary Kate Marshall said:

“Menopause is a natural stage of life that affects half the population, yet it remains a taboo subject at workplaces.

"Too many workers suffer in silence, afraid to speak up about the physical and emotional toll menopause takes on them.

"Women are being forced into early retirement with less superannuation because they can't take time off to deal with menopause.

“We need to break the silence and the stigma around these issues.

"Introducing 12 days of reproductive leave is an essential step toward ensuring that our workplaces are more inclusive, supportive, and healthy."

CoreLogic data released today reveals Perth renters are paying an average of 33.2 per cent of their income on rent, above the 30 per cent threshold that defines housing stress. CoreLogic’s analysis also shows all WA federal electorates have faced significant increases in rent since the Covid-19 pandemic, with rents jumping between 50.3 per cent and 74.3 per cent over five years. Independents, Greens and other crossbench candidates are pushing the next government to substantially increase income support to tackle the cost-of-living crisis and lift people out of poverty. With a minority government possible after this election, crossbenchers have signed a joint statement with ACOSS and representatives from the community sector declaring that raising the rate is “the most important thing the next government could do to address the cost-of-living crisis”. The statement said the current rates of JobSeeker at just $56 a day and Youth Allowance at $48 a day force people to go without food, healthcare and a safe place…
