1,000 days of war in Ukraine: Australia for UNHCR calls for solidarity ahead of gruelling winter season

As the full-scale conflict in Ukraine reaches the grim milestone of 1000 days, Australia for UNHCR is calling for increased support and solidarity with the millions of civilians whose lives have been upended by the ongoing war.

“Tomorrow marks 1,000 days since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine – 1,000 days of relentless attacks, loss of lives, destroyed homes and the displacement of countless families. Each passing day, more people are forced to flee,” said Trudi Mitchell, CEO of Australia for UNHCR.

“Soon winter will be here again – the third since the full-scale war began. This season is predicted to be the worst because of extremely cold weather and Russian attacks on energy infrastructure,” she said.

Russia’s bombardment of energy infrastructure has decreased overall energy generation by 65 per cent in recent months, disrupting heating, water and electricity supplies.

“With the harshest winter yet upon us, the humanitarian needs in Ukraine are more critical than ever,” said Ms Mitchell.

The escalation of hostilities in recent months have significantly increased humanitarian needs near the shifting frontline.

UNHCR’s efforts are focused on providing immediate relief and long-term support to those who have been forced to flee their homes and those who remain in perilous conditions.

With energy sources severely strained, UNHCR is helping families insulate their homes and equipping collective shelters for the most vulnerable displaced people with heaters and insulation kits.

The agency plans to provide almost 20,000 households with assistance to insulate their homes this winter and over 550,000 people with cash assistance to cover their most basic needs during the cold months.

Since August, some 170,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the east, with many evacuated from areas experiencing hostilities.

They join the nearly 4 million who remain displaced within Ukraine and 6.7 million more who have sought refuge outside the country. This includes 400,000 new refugees who crossed into Europe between January and August this year.

“I’d encourage any Australian who can to contribute what they can. Your generous donation can help repair damaged homes and keep families warm through winter,” added Ms Mitchell.

“The resilience and courage of the Ukrainian people inspire us to continue our work and to stand in solidarity with them during these challenging times.”

Small steps taken but more must be done to protect children from domestic and family violence

Small steps taken but more must be done to protect children from domestic and family violence Barnardos Australia strongly welcomes the NSW Government’s landmark strategy to acknowledge children as victim-survivors of domestic and family violence (DFV) in their own right, but more must be done to protect them. The NSW Government today released its Building Better Responses: NSW Strategy to Respond to the Use of Domestic and Family Violence 2026–2030, which recognises children are often exposed to DFV which can lead to worse health, social and educational outcomes and difficulties with emotional regulation, aggression and mental health. Major funding, including…
