UNHCR has delivered thousands of emergency items to displaced people in Lebanon following the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
“We welcome the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. We hope it can put an end to the violence, destruction, and immense suffering,” said Trudi Mitchell, CEO of Australia for UNHCR.
Immediately after the ceasefire came into force, residents of south Lebanon, the southern suburbs of Beirut and the Bekaa began their return after months of forced displacement.
UNHCR will continue providing essential assistance as displaced people rebuild their lives after suffering much loss and destruction.
Since the ceasefire announcement, UNHCR trucks have delivered emergency supplies to more than 3,000 people in Baalbek, including blankets, mattresses, winter jackets, plastic sheets, solar lamps and sleeping mats.
“The ceasefire brings much-needed relief to those who have endured unimaginable hardship. It is crucial that we continue to support their recovery,” said Ms Mitchell.
“Australians have always shown immense generosity, and now, more than ever, support is needed to help these families rebuild their lives.”
UNHCR will continue working closely with local authorities and partners to provide much-needed assistance to Lebanese people and Syrian refugees to help them stay warm and safe this winter.
