GS Engineering & Construction (E&C) Australia, as part of the Terra Verde joint venture, has signed a contract with the Victorian Government to deliver the Tunnels North contract for Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East in Melbourne, Australia.
The contract, valued at AU$1.7 billion, involves design and construction of nearly 10 kilometres of two parallel tunnels and two station boxes in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. GS E&C Australia holds a 33.5% stake in the project, partnering with Webuild and Bouygues Construction Australia.
Commissioned by Victoria’s Suburban Rail Loop Authority, the project includes excavation of tunnels between Glen Waverley and Box Hill; construction of 39 cross passages along the tunnels; two station boxes; two tunnel access shafts; and one intervention and ventilation shaft.
GS E&C’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Yoon Hong Huh said, “Securing this contract for SRL East is a significant step in expanding our footprint in Australia's infrastructure sector. As part of Terra Verde joint venture, we are excited to apply our global tunnelling expertise and local knowledge to deliver this city-shaping project.”
GS E&C Australia’s Managing Director, Dr. Steve Sung-han Cho, said, “Reaching this contract award is a major milestone for us and for Melbourne’s future. Suburban Rail Loop will create long-term benefits for Victoria’s economy by fostering local business growth and generating employment opportunities. Terra Verde is committed to ensuring that local industry plays a pivotal role in delivering this critical infrastructure.”
SRL is the largest infrastructure project in Victoria’s history, and will help shape how the city grows in decades ahead – delivering more public transport and more homes. The 90-kilometre orbital rail line will connect to all of Melbourne’s existing major train lines from Cheltenham in the south east to Werribee, via Melbourne Airport, enhancing connectivity and ensuring the city’s liveability for decades to come. Construction of SRL East is well underway, with tunnelling to start in 2026, and trains to be taking passengers in 2035.
