Monash expert: New construction fund provides hope, but can’t afford same mistakes

Monash University < 1 mins read

The federal government has announced up to $900 million to boost competition and productivity across the economy, including cutting red tape in the construction industry to meet housing demands.

Monash University’s Associate Professor Duncan Maxwell is available to discuss whether the policy will help meet the National Housing Accord's target of building 1.2 million homes.

The following can be attributed to Dr Maxwell:

“The new flagged investment in construction is welcome, but it cannot be achieved via business as usual traditional building techniques. Industry support through regulatory reform, skills and capacity growth, and cultural change is necessary to execute projects through modern methods of construction.

“While an effective response to the housing target is necessary in the current housing crisis, we cannot lose sight of industry carbon reduction. This is a wicked problem to do more with less, and innovation is required to drive productivity in response to these challenges.

“Our research reveals the importance of prioritising build quality, design flexibility, and community benefit as new ways of building are implemented. Australia can’t afford to repeat the recent failures we have seen internationally, including the collapse of modular building companies in the UK.”

Peter Dutton’s nuclear fantasy equals soaring power bills

13 December 2024 Solutions for Climate Australia today called out figures provided by PeterDutton on the future cost of power from nuclear reactors as expensive and a failure to tackle climate pollution. “While we are waiting decades for Mr Dutton’s nuclear reactors, the Coalition proposes to pour money into propping up expensive, ageing coal power stations that are already failing, and massively increasing climate pollution. “CSIRO’s optimistic estimates of the costs of nuclear reactors last week show them as twice as expensive as the renewable energy pathway. Somehow Mr Dutton claims using the most expensive source of electricity will bring…

Reflections on 2024

Reflections on 2024By Jon Davies, CEO, Australian Constructors Association As 2024 comes to a close, it’s remarkable to reflect on just how much has changed in our industry over the past year. Few could have anticipated the seismic shift brought about by the decision to place theCFMEU into administration—a once-in-a-century event that will undoubtedly shape the future of construction in Australia. For too long, our industry has been stuck in a winner-takes-all mindset, where one party’s gain often meantanother’s loss. This approach has bred inefficiency, mistrust and missed opportunities. But what if we rewrote the script? What if collaboration replaced…
