New Report on Population Growth and Water Security Released Today

Sustainable Population Australia < 1 mins read

Water demand due to population growth is outstripping improvements in Australians’ efficiency of household water use, according to new research commissioned by Sustainable Population Australia (SPA), in a report titled Big thirsty Australia: how population growth threatens our water security and sustainability

The full report is attached and available to read from the SPA website HERE

The report finds that stabilising Australia’s population size is by far the cheapest, simplest, greenest and safest way to guarantee Australia’s water security. The alternative of ongoing high population growth would mean much higher water bills and greater energy requirements for desalination.

The embargoed report was announced in an earlier media release, Population growth weakening Australia’s water security: new report, distributed on 21/11/2024, and may be read in full HERE.

New Approach To International Education Inconsistent And Lacks Integrity

The Australian Government’s newly announced policy approach for the international education sector is causing significant frustration and uncertainty for members of the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia (ITECA). ITECA is the peak body representing independent skills training, higher education, and international education providers. The approach, framed as a legal exercise under the Migration Act 1958 (Cth), follows Parliament’s failure to pass amendments to the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (Cth) after four days of public hearings through a Senate Committee that also included more than 260 submissions where the adverse outcomes of Australian Government policy were laid bare…

Australia still at ‘third world’ rates of population growth

Continuation of a third-world pace of population growth, at 2.1% pa, puts further pressure on Australia’s housing, infrastructure and fragile environment, says Sustainable Population Australia (SPA). SPA national President Peter Strachan was responding to today’s ABS population figures that revealed Australia grew by 552,000 in the year to 30 June 2024, more than 80 per cent of which resulted from net overseas migration (NOM of 445,600). “Australia cannot afford to keep growing by over half a million people, or by almost the population of Tasmania (575,400) each year,” says Mr. Strachan. “Infrastructure costs associated with that number of people damage…
