OPAN WELCOMES NEW AGED CARE ACT

OPAN 2 mins read

Friday, 22 November 2024

The Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) has welcomed the passage of the new Aged Care Act through the Senate last night, calling it a significant win for older people.

OPAN Director, Policy and Systemic Advocacy Samantha Edmonds said this was a historic moment, enshrining the rights of older people in legislation.

“This has been a long time coming, and we thank the Parliament for passing this important legislation before the end of the year,” Ms Edmonds said.

“We have long advocated for a rights-based Act which puts older people at the centre of the legislation, and we have achieved that.

“We are pleased to see that there will be a positive duty on providers to understand and deliver services to older people in line with the statement of rights.

“While this is an excellent step forward, there is more work to be done.

“Reform of this scale will take time to implement – and we need to ensure the rules uphold the rights of older people.

“OPAN will continue to work closely with the Government, our fellow peaks and aged care providers on the implementation of the Act, ensuring older people are engaged in the process.

“We will do this through our ongoing systemic advocacy and in our capacity as a member on the Aged Care Transition Taskforce, as well as through our on-the-ground advocates who work tirelessly to protect and promote the rights of older people.

“We would like to thank all Parliamentarians for their efforts to pass this legislation, and we look forward to seeing the benefits of it in the years to come.”

Climate pollution and El NiƱo: a dangerous double act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - JUNE 16 2026 The Climate Council is warning that climate pollution andEl Niño will combine in Australia this year to supercharge the risk of dangerous drought, heatwaves and fires. Australia's Bureau of Meteorology this afternoon officially declared an El Niño is now present. This climate driver is usually associated with lower rainfall and higher temperatures in Australia, particularly in south-eastern states. Together climate pollution and El Niño load the dice, so they are more likely to land on record heat and fire conditions. Climate Councillor, Adjunct Professor Andrew Watkins said: “It’s important to understand that this…

800 million reasons to reject NSW biggest coal mining proposal

Approving the proposed Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) coal mine expansion would unleash 800 million tonnes of climate pollution and put more Australians in harm's way, the Climate Council warns. The referral of the largest coal mining proposal in NSW’s history sets up a major test for the state’s Independent Planning Commission (IPC). The HVO Continuation Project, a joint venture between Glencore and Yancoal near Singleton in the Hunter Valley, would extend open-cut coal mining until 2045 and expand the mine, opening-up extraction of an additional 200 million tonnes of coal. Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie said: “This proposed massive coal…

Australia needs a compassionate and practical plan for 77,700 visa overstayers

Media release: 11th June 2026 Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) is calling on the Federal Government to substantially expand and promote assisted voluntary return for people living in Australia after their visas have expired. The Department of Home Affairs estimated that 77,700 unlawful non-citizens were living in Australia as of 30 June 2025, excluding people already in held or community detention. Only 467 people departed through the government’s Return and Reintegration Assistance Program during 2024–25. SPA argues that the disparity raises serious questions about whether Australia is doing enough to help people resolve their immigration status before they become homeless, vulnerable…
