School holidays no longer provide mental health protection for Victorian adolescents

New researchas found that school holidays, which previously provided a protective buffer against suicidal and self-harm behaviours in adolescents, no longer have this effect in the post-pandemic era. Using data from the National Ambulance Surveillance System (NASS), Turning Point and Monash University researchers analysed 20,635 ambulance attendances for suicidal and self-harm behaviours among adolescents aged 12-17 across Victoria. The study found significant reductions in crisis attendances during school holidays before COVID-19. Government passes reform paving way for more affordable homes in Victoria

Victoria’s peak body for community housing has celebrated the state government passing planning laws that aim to deliver more affordable homes. On Wednesday, the Planning Amendment (Better Decisions Made Faster) Bill 2025 passed both houses of parliament, including amendments which legislate mandatory affordable housing requirements into Victoria’s planning system.
